DJ Unk’s wife, Sherika Long-Platt, has confirmed that the rapper and DJ passed away due to a heart attack on Friday, January 24. Long-Platt shared the news with TMZ, clarifying that there were no drugs involved in his death and that the music legend died peacefully in his sleep. She wanted to address the cause of death to prevent any rumors from circulating.
A candlelight vigil was held in Unk’s honor on Sunday, January 26, in his hometown of Atlanta. The 43-year-old’s death was initially shared by his wife on Facebook, where she wrote a heartfelt message, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER.”
His label, Big Oomp Records, also issued a statement, mourning the loss of “a true ATL legend.” They highlighted his massive contributions to the industry, especially with iconic hits like “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” which continue to inspire artists and fans worldwide.
Unk had previously dealt with heart health issues, including a heart attack in 2009, and had discussed his struggles with maintaining a healthy lifestyle in interviews.
