What do rappers mean by “Ad-lib”? What is an “Adlib”?

The slang term “Ad-lib” (also spelled Adlib or Ad lib) is a noun which is used in Hip-Hop/rap music and the culture, the music industry, and by rappers to reference signature impulsive vocal effects.

An Ad-lib is a signature impulsive sound rappers makes on songs.

Examples of ad-libs are Travis Scott‘s “Straight up!”, Big Sean‘s “Boi”, or Gucci Mane‘s “Brr”.

The term “Ad-lib” has been used by Lil Wayne, Kanye West, J. Cole, Tyga, Chance the Rapper, Logic, Lil Yachty, E-40, and many more rappers.
