The beat for 50 Cent‘s hit single In da Club was originally given to D12 for the 8 Mile soundtrack, but the Detroit group passed on the beat.

After working with Dr. Dre on a few song for their 2001 debut album Devil’s Night, D12 was back in the studio working on their sophomore album, the group received a beat from Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo which would later be “In da Club.” After hearing the beat, D12 passed on it and it was given to 50 cent, who originally recorded his version of the track with only the drum beat and at the time in 2002 just signed to Shady/Aftermath/Interscope.

In da Club became the lead single off 50 Cent’s debut studio album Get Rich or Die Tryin’, The song was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks and became nominated for Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song at the 46th Grammy Awards.
