Nelly released on of his biggest single “Hot in Herre” on April 16, 2002. The song was off his second studio album Nellyville, which was also released in 2002.

Why does “Hot in Herre” have two “r”s?

The extra “R” in Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” was to emphasize that it is indeed hot in herre… This was a thing in the early 2000s as Christina Aguilera’s “Dirrty” from 2002 and Chingy’s “Right Thurr” from 2003 also had double r’s. Nelly and Chingy are both from St. Louis, Missouri. “That’s just how we talk!… In California, they say it proper.” Chingy told Gavin Edwards in 2006.

Hot in Herre was produced by The Neptunes (Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams). The song won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rap Solo Performance at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards on February 23, 2003.

Nelly revealed how the song came together in a 2017 interview with The Fader. Watch below.
