Jermaine Dupri says he’s responsible for New York radios playing Southern Rap

Published December 21, 2022 by

Jermaine claims credit for taking Southern hip-hop to New York

It’s safe to say producer and label executive Jermaine Dupri and his So So Deaf crew introduced Southern hip—hop to many places. Speaking on The Gauds Podcast, Jermaine took credit for sneaking Southern rap into New York radios.

“The reason New York plays down south music on the radio is because of me,” he declared. “Bone Crusher and the YoungBloodZ were all over Hot 97 in a way that like nobody could ever imagine. And I hired DJ Envy to work for me.”

He continued, “My attack on New York radio and the New York streets from the south is like no other. Nobody, no other company, nothing. Not as far as back then, now everybody else moving forward, that door opened cause I was out there beating the streets.”
