Missy Elliott says her first album was the easiest to make

Published December 7, 2022 by

Missy Elliott has had different experiences while making her albums

Missy Elliott has had an impactful ride in hip-hop over the two decades and a half of her career. While the Virginia rapper’s discography houses several classics, she recently admitted that she struggled to create some of the albums. On Tuesday (December 6), Elliott shared a thread of tweets explaining the diverse experiences she, along with longtime collaborator Timbaland, had while putting together her first five albums.

“My 1st album was stressfree because I didn’t have any expectations,” Misdemeanor wrote of her debut album Supa Dupa Fly in the first tweet. “My label told me they would give me my own label if I did 1 album so me & @Timbaland completed this album in 2 weeks not knowing this would be the beginning of many more to come.”

Now this was my 2nd album “Da Real World” this was the hardest album to complete because of the success of the 1st album I was so hard on myself & for a while This was my least favorite until years later I realized the MASTERPIECE @Timbaland & I had created💯🔥 pic.twitter.com/iYJBtyPoTx

The 51-year-old described her sophomore studio effort, Da Real World, as the “hardest album to complete because of the success of the 1st album.” She pointed out that the album was her “least favorite until years later I realized the MASTERPIECE @Timbaland & I had created.”

With her third project Missy E… So Addictive, Elliot “felt a small relief since her debut release “allowed” her to try out new sounds and show the world what the “future of music could sound like in our minds.”

Since her initial three albums were “so different in sound & cadence,” Elliot and Timb were “scratching our heads on which direction to go next” while making Under Construction.

Following the success of the previous albums, Elliot and Tim went back to “sound experimenting” since they “felt free to explore more” on This Is Not A Test. However, the rapper did emphasize that every album she’s released had a “lil pressure except ‘SUPADUPAFLY’ & ‘So Addictive’.”

This album was challenging because every1 of my albums was so different in sound & cadence Tim and I was scratching our heads on which direction to go next😩 so we took our love for old school Hip Hop & breaks beats & Blended with our FUTURE sound & this what came of it🔥 pic.twitter.com/drwRO8lkns
