The ESPN Host Rips Critics, Highlights Impact of Hip Hop’s Political Engagement
Stephen A. Smith has defended Snoop Dogg, Nelly, and Soulja Boy after the Hip-Hop community reacted negatively to their performances at pro-Donald Trump events. The rappers and Rick Ross were booked for various inauguration celebrations in Washington, D.C., sparking controversy among fans and fellow artists.
On his podcast, Smith fiercely responded to their critics, questioning why the rappers shouldn’t have the right to make money in their way. “Soulja Boy ain’t got no right to make some money?” Smith said, pointing out the rapper’s significant earnings from the event. He also highlighted Snoop Dogg’s impact, emphasizing his charitable contributions, including funding a youth football league and helping send players to college and the NFL.
Smith also defended Nelly’s stance, stating that the rapper is simply performing for those who respect the office and pay the right fee without engaging in political matters. He also criticized the way some people turned against Ice Cube for his political affiliations, reminding listeners of the significant role Hip-Hop has played in changing the lives of countless Black people.
The defense comes as Snoop Dogg faces ongoing scrutiny for his previous opposition to Trump, though his views have softened in recent years, especially after Trump pardoned a Death Row Records co-founder in 2021.
