Bryson Tiller discusses DJ Khaled’s advice when he asked him to appear on ‘Major Key’ album while he was depressed

Bryson had to feature on the project regardless

Bryson Tiller recently appeared on The Breakfast Club where he recounted when DJ Khaled asked him to make a record for his 2016 album Major Key, but was reluctant because of his poor mental health at the time.

Khaled couldn’t take no for an answer and advised him to put it all in the music. “If you go listen to the song that I did for Khaled’s Major Key album [‘Ima Be Alright’], I told him before we did it. He was like, ‘Yo, I need a song!’ This is when I’m like super buzzing,” Bryson explained.

“I was like, ‘I’ma just be honest with you, Khaled, I’m depressed right now. I got a lot going on: lawsuits, people threatening me back in my hometown, all types of stuff.’

“He was like, ‘Nah, man, just put it in the music.’ Every time I listen to [‘Ima Be Alright’] I cringe so hard because I’m like, ‘Man, this is not who I am.’ He eventually ended up bringing me ‘Wild Thoughts.’”

He continued, “He didn’t really care […] ‘Put it in music’ is not always the best thing. Don’t get me wrong, it works. I hate when I’m going through some shit and then I gotta go be [regular].”

“This is probably gonna be my last one for a minute,” Bryson recently told Complex Music. “I just wanna take a hiatus ’cause my number one passion is video games. I’ve been designing a game for the past three years.”

He continued, “I’ve been looking into internships with different companies.” He also explained that he wants to spend more time with his family, especially his daughters.

“I want to focus on, number one is getting closer to my daughters. My oldest daughter is 10 years old now. I’m tired of telling her I gotta work or I gotta be in the studio and then we can hang out.”

Tiller learnt from his previous mistakes

Bryson Tiller is prepared to unveil his true-self with his forthcoming self-titled album. Speaking to Complex, Tiller said his previous releases have taught him not to let opinions influence his creativity.

“I felt like now is the time to just show people what I’m capable of,” he explained. “[True To Self] taught me why it is important to remain true to yourself, because I wasn’t being true to myself on that album at all.

“I was saying a lot of truth, but not being true to who I am. It’s not me really understanding who I am as an artist and what I’m capable of.”

  • Bryson Tiller says his ‘Serenity’ album will be 3 parts: R&B, Rap & Pop

Bryson Tiller says his ‘Serenity’ album will be 3 parts: R&B, Rap & Pop

Bryson Tiller released his most-recent album Anniversary on October 2, 2020. Tiller teased that the album would not be his last of the year, but there’s been some delay on his album, titled Serenity.

Tiller gave an update on the album and why it’s been taking some time to finish up. He mentioned not being in the right headspace and the depression being at the forefront of the creative process for blockage. But since he’s been sitting on this music for so long, we’re in for more music than ever.

“I realized how much fucking music that I had for Serenity, all this different shit,” he said while going live. “So, Serenity is now not one album, but it’s three albums. It’s three volumes. One is a rap album, one is an R&B album and then one is a pop album.”

There’s still no official release date on this album, but, we can be very hopeful of a release some time before the year is up. The only issue with the release is his label situation. Tiller is having some difficulties with his RCA contract.

“Until I figure out the shit for my deal, with my label and all that shit, the business side, I can’t necessarily give that,” he said. “That’s the only thing holding those projects back.”

Bryson Tiller & YG’s First Week Album Sales Are Out

Bryson and YG’s first week numbers are here

Bryson Tiller released his third studio album Anniversary last week on October 2nd, the fifth anniversary of his debut album Trapsoul. Tiller announced the project at the end of Inhale video that dropped in early September. A message appeared in the video reading “Album coming this fall.”

The ten-track album features Toronto rapper Drake on the song ‘Outta Time’, Drizzy is the only feature. DJ Akademiks recently unveiled the first week sales projections for the album and it is expected to move 59k units during this week. This is almost a halfway drop from his 2017 album True To Self that sold 107k of which 47k were pure sales.

DJ Ak also revealed first week sales for YG’s My Life 4 Hunnid album. The Compton spitter is expected to sell 40k units.

This is not too bad for YG since the numbers have slightly gone up compared to his 2019 album 4real 4real that sold 37k units in its first week of release. My Life 4 Hunnid features some frequent YG’s collaborators like Tyga, Ty Dolla Sign and Lil Wayne who appears twice. Other features include Logic, Gunna, Day Sulan and ex girlfriend Kehlani. Stay tuned for chart performances once they are out.

  • Drake was supposed to be a surprise feature on Bryson Tiller’s ‘Trapsoul’ album

Drake was supposed to be a surprise feature on Bryson Tiller’s ‘Trapsoul’ album

Tiller and Drake’s timing didn’t come until five years later

Bryson Tiller sat down with Genius’ Rob Markman to discuss his new album Anniversary, along with his everything that’s happened over the course of the last five years. One take away from the in-depth interview, is Bryson sharing details that Drake was supposed to be featured on his 2015 album, Trapsoul.

“It’s crazy because he was supposed to be on Trap Soul,” Tiller said during the interview. The same way [Outta Time] happened and [Drake] was supposed to be a surprise feature, I wasn’t gonna list him and he was gonna pop up on the album. It’s just dope to come back five years later, full circle.”

Tiller details that Drake wanted to do a “Don’t” remix with him. Drake was also fond of The Sequence. Obviously, these collabs never happen, but here we are five years later with “Outta Time.”

Bryson Tiller said about 8-9 months ago, Tiller and Drake played music for each other in the studio. Tiller was supposed to appear on Drake’s More Life playlist/album, but a not-so-confident, mentally-drained Tiller felt he couldn’t deliver the “proper” verse for a Drake album.
