Danny Brown discusses his ambitions in the comedy industry: ‘I still got time’

Danny wants to perfect his stand-up comedy skills

Danny Brown has shown interest in comedy but believes he still has much to learn. During a recent conversation with HipHopDX, the rapper-singer explained that he is taking his time to hone his art.

“I can just be funny and talk shit, but to actually write good jokes and shit, I still don’t get it,” Brown said. “My favorite stand-up comedians was always the ones that, y’know, you could laugh at and they had jokes, but they always leave you with that little gem; it’s kind of like you’re learning something too.”

He continued, “I want to be that good, and that takes some time, but, y’know, with comedy, you can be 80 years old and still be on stage cracking jokes, so I still got time.”

Danny Brown says Mac Miller’s death inspired him to sober up

    Mac’s passing ‘really scared’ Brown

Danny Brown didn’t have the best words to say about Mac Miller in the early 2010s, but they both later became close and spent some time together.

During a conversation with HipHopDX before a show at Los Angeles’ Masonic Lounge on December 8, Brown explained that he had to start avoiding Mac because they used to “get a little fucked up and shit” every time they linked up and he was trying to get his life back in line at the time.

However, the “Really Doe” artist planned to kick it with Mac right before his demise. “At that time, I was trying to fix myself up, and I was thinking to myself, ‘Man, I know Mac — every time I hang out with him, we kinda do get a little fucked up and shit,’” he said. “And I wasn’t trying to be like that, so I didn’t wanna go … and the day I was supposed to leave to go hang out with him, on the radio, they announced [that he had died].

“And it was just like, I don’t know … it just kinda hit me kinda hard, ’cause it was like damn, y’know? It just let you know how easy or how quick some shit could just happen like that, y’know? So yeah, obviously I didn’t get clean at that time, but that just really scared me and shit.”

Danny Brown voiced a lifeguard in Grand Theft Auto V

Danny Brown voiced one of the lifeguards in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V, since his involvement in the Game, he doesn’t like playing it.

In a 2019 interview, Danny said I can’t play the new one, though. It’s hard when I’m involved. It’s amazing, I just hate to hear my own voice. It’s weird, it makes me a little bit shy. […] For some reason, music is different for me. Maybe it’s because I’ve been doing it for so long, but it doesn’t matter to me with music. Hearing myself in Grand Theft Auto was just so f*cking surreal. I don’t know whether to enjoy myself or shed a tear [laughs]. I don’t wanna get emotional playing a video game.

“I’ve always been cool with the guys over at Rockstar. I played the lifeguard in Grand Theft Auto V [laughs]. I had connected with them when I was still with my prior manager, before Dart [Parker]. That was forever ago. The process was hectic, though. I was on tour. You gotta do what you gotta do when it’s Grand Theft Auto. That’s one of the best things in media history.” Danny Brown told Billboard. Watch and hear Danny Brown’s voice in Grand Theft Auto below.
