JAY-Z cleared an estimate of $12M of debt for DMX to leave Def Jam in 2006

DMX left Def Jam in 2006, with the help of JAY-Z

In 2006, DMX‘s $12 million debt would be wiped away by JAY-Z. “X was in debt over there. He probably owed about $12 million,” Dee noted. “Me and Hov got together, and I went up to the office and I asked him, ‘Can you do me a favor and let us sign X to Sony.’ He released him, he wiped out the debt clean and let him go. He didn’t have to pay nothing back.”

X walked away believing his won and that he remained better than JAY-Z after the debt was cleared, but didn’t know the lengths Dee went to, in order for him to be released from the label.

The Columbia Records-owned Sony Music would be X’s next home. He would only release one album on the label,  Year of the Dog…Again.

When JAY-Z became President of Def Jam in 2004, DMX had a rough time seeing Jay as a superior. DMX felt that he was better than HOV, so this situation didn’t go well, as Co-Founder of Ruff Ryders Darin “Dee” Dean explains it.

“We called it a draw because they both was nice, so we said, ‘Alright this is a draw.’ X felt like he won, Hov gonna feel like he won,” Dee explained. “There was an animosity there always. It was nothing verbal, but it was just in [DMX’s] mind like, ‘I won, I’m better than you.’”

Def Jam hints at a new fighting game

Def Jam returning back to the video game console?

17 years ago, Def Jam Records joined forces with EA Sports to release a fighting game: Def Jam Vendetta. The game was available for the PlayStation 2 and GameCube console. The following year, Def Jam: Fight for NY would release, followed by Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover (2006) and Def Jam: Icon (2007).

“The streets saying we need a new Def Jam game,” tweeted the label, who isn’t incorrect. Twitter has put the fighting game on a pedestal with NBA Street, also byway of EA Sports BIG brand.

“Once our twitter hits 1M, we have a special announcement for y’all !,” they said in a follow-up tweet. Well, here we are — they’re at 1 million followers — so now we just wait on the news.

Rick Rubin founded Def Jam Records in his NYU dorm room

In 1984, Rick Rubin founded Def Jam records in his New York University dorm room. The first record Def Jam released was T La Rock and Jazzy Jay’s It’s Yours, which was produced by Rick Rubin. Jazzy Jay introduced Rick Rubin to Russell Simmons, a manager and promoter at the time. Rick and Russell became partners and Def Jam released “I Need a Beat” by LL Cool J.

Early Def Jam imprints had Rick Rubin’s college dorm “5 University Pl. #712” listed as the label’s address. Def Jam Records launched the careers of the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and many more hip-hop artists.

In a mini-documentary with Rollin Stone, Rick Rubin visited #712 Weinstein at New York University, his dorm where Def Jam Records started. The documentary features Russell Simmons, LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys’ Adam Horowitz, former Def Jam president Lyor Cohen and some of Rick Rubin’s former roommates.

I can’t believe it’s 30 years, It’s really trippy. It doesn’t feel like that long. I’ll say I don’t normally look back very much, but when I come here, I think of the crazy parties that we had, being threatened to be kicked out for noise complaints, the adventures. Rick Rubin.
