Nicki Minaj Refused to Sign with Gucci Mane in the Late 2000s, Citing Concerns Over His Impact on Her Career

Nicki Minaj turned down Gucci Mane’s offer to sign in the late 2000s, citing concerns about his influence on her career

Nicki Minaj never made the signing with Gucci Mane in the late 2000s because she was quoted by her former manager, Debra Antney, as saying he would “destroy her”.

Antney, who also happens to be the mother of Waka Flocka Flame, managed a host of Atlanta artists including Gucci and OJ Da Juiceman, just before getting into business with Minaj towards the end of 2008. It was almost two years since at-that-time-revered rapper Lil Wayne discovered Minaj but had not given her a deal, so she decided to move to Atlanta to be near Antney and work on that signing.

Her period in Atlanta saw Minaj spend a lot of time with Gucci and his 1017 crew, which set off conversations about her joining his label. However, according to Antney, Minaj knew that wasn’t the right move.

In an interview on Ray Daniels’ The GAUDS Show on November 25, Antney explained, “That was one of the things she knew: Gucci was going to destroy her. That nigga was always in jail, always in beefs, always in some trouble. She wasn’t going to shine over there. I remember giving Baby that tape and saying, “You’re going to be a fool if you don’t sign this girl.”

Gucci is not pleased with his label performance

Gucci Mane has trimmed down the roster of his 1017 Records label and has released almost all the artists except for two.

He made this known in a video posted on Instagram on October 18 saying that he wanted to speak about this on 10/17 but failed to do so.

In the clip, Gucci mentioned that he was unhappy with the outcomes after going through his record label’s latest P&L report (Profit & Loss statement).

“I just seen my P&L with all my artists,” Gucci said. “You know it’s a whole shit show in the industry right now, but when I’m looking at my P&L, and me being a businessman, I think that I’m going to have to release almost all my artists, except for Pooh Shiesty and Foogiano.

“This is a decision I didn’t want to make. I thought about it. I could keep all of them under the contract. But I said hey, fuck it. Let’s just make the unselfish decision, and let them take they talents elsewhere.”

Gucci believes he belongs to ‘Mount Rushmore of anything’

Gucci Mane and B.G. recently appeared on Rap Radar Podcast to promote their new joint project, Choppers & Bricks, where the former discussed his place in the mixtape fraternity.

The Atlanta rapper was asked about a meme from last month that showed Future, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne and Jeezy as the “Mixtape Mount Rushmore.”

“I definitely belong there on the Mount Rushmore of anything,” Gucci declared. “That’s just my opinion, but I’m biased.”

DJ Drama left out Nicki Minaj’s verse on Gucci Mane’s 2008 Gangsta Grillz mixtape ‘The Movie’

Drama is not proud of his decision to exclude Nicki from Gucci’s tape

DJ Drama has had longstanding relationships with many artists over his career years, including Nicki Minaj. Recently speaking Bootleg Kev, Drama reveled that he once removed Nicki’s verse on Gucci Mane’s 2008 Gangsta Grillz mixtape, The Movie. The “Red Ruby Sleezy” rapper was still in early days of her career.

“When he brought it to me, the first song on the tape, the first voice you heard on the tape was Nicki Minaj,” Drama remembered.

He continued, “Obviously, this is an early Nicki Minaj. And disrespectfully, I felt like we can’t have a Gangsta Grillz with me and Gucci, and the first voice you heard not be Gucci, so I removed her verse from that song. I feel terrible to this day.”

Drama later that year made up to Nicki Minaj by including her on Lil Wayne’s Gangsta Grillz tape, Dedication 3.
