    Reason leaves TDE

Reason has been making public his frustration with Top Dawg Entertainment specifically concerning the rollout of his latest album. Last week, the California rapper announced on social media that he has finally parted ways with the label, in a good way though.

“THE LAST 7 YEARS HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLE, AND I’VE APPRECIATED ALL THE TIME AND EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE COME WITHIN THAT SPAN OF TIME,” Reason wrote in part of the message. “I CANT EVEN PUT INTO WORDS THE SURREAL FEELING I VE HAD OF BEING ABLE TO SHARE MY THOUGHTS, EXPRESSIONS, EMOTIONS, STORIES, AND EXPERIENCES WITH YOU ALL THROUGH THE PLATFORM PROVIDED TO ME BY TOP DAWG ENTERTAINMENT.

“WITH THAT BEING SAID, IT COMES WITH GREAT APPRECIATION AND EXCITEMENT THAT I WANT TO ANNOUNCE MY SPLIT WITH TDE. I WANT TO GIVE A HUGE THANK YOU TO TOP HIMSELF, NOT ONLY FOR GIVING ME A CHANCE TO LIVE OUT MY DREAM BUT ALSO FOR HEARING ME AND UNDERSTANDING MY DECISION TO TRAVEL A DIFFERENT PATH AFTER THE YEARS. THERE’S TRULY NO WORDS FOR THE AMOUNT OF RESPECT I HAVE FOR YOU, AND THAT’LL NEVER CHANGE, NO MATTER WHAT.”

This also explains how he was able to land a collab with Kendrick Lamar with “New Freezer.” “When I first met Kendrick Lamar I was recording my album in one room, Kendrick was recording his album in one room, SZA was recording her album in another room,” Rich said after he was asked about his relationship with TDE. “And then one day they came in like ‘yo, Kendrick wants to hear like some new records,’ I played him ‘New Freezer’ and his was like ‘yeah.’”

Some of Rich’s earlier songs like “Plug Walk” and “Cocaina” were released via TDE and Interscope.

Doechii launched her musical career in 2015 and later gained attention with the record “Girls.” She later received more recognition after the single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” from her 2020 first project Oh The Places You’ll Go, went viral on TikTok. She also featured on TDE’s Isiah Rashad’s album, The House is Burning, and also accompanied him on his Lil Sunny’s Awesome Vacation Tour.

Punch considers Kendrick Lamar’s departure from TDE as growth

As fans around the world anticipate Kendrick Lamar’s next studio album, they’re also to accept the fact that it’ll be his last release via Top Dawg Entertainment. TDE President Punch recently appeared in an interview with The Mic where he spoke about Kendrick leaving TDE.

“I don’t even know if I would describe it that way as ready to leave, as more so ready to build his own thing,” Punch said. “That’s a grown man right now. We watched him grow from a teenager up into an established grown man, a businessman, and one of the greatest artists of all time. So how long do you actually be signed up under somebody? It’s been almost 20 years. So it’s time to move on and try new things and venture out,” he added.

The label executive also explained why an album from Black Hippy, a supergroup made up of Kendrick, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q, never materialized. “We definitely wanted to do a Black Hippy album. But it was such a learning experience for us, everything was new,” he explained.

“The timing never really panned out. When one guy would be recording his album, another guy would be on tour. Everybody was never in the same timeframe. So we didn’t want to hold back; we wanted to keep going and just push further into their individual careers. In hindsight, I wish I would’ve pushed the Black Hippy album more. That was always my goal, personally. You would have to ask everybody individually to see if that’s what their goal was.”

While fellow producers Rapsody, Terrace Martin, Boi-1da, as well as TDE members Ret One, Kenny Beats, and BADBADNOTGOOD welcomed Sounwave back, many fans had their hopes for a new Kendrick album revived. “New Kendrick soon?” One Instagram user asked. “Plz tell Kendrick to drop,” another added.

    K. Dot began the album rollout for the follow-up to his 2017’s Pulitzer Prize-winning, DAMN, in August when he made a rare announcement that the album will be his last release through his long-time home label, TDE.

In September, it was reported that the California megastar registered over 30 song titles on ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). Among the registered tracks are unheard records like “Before The Hangman’s Noose,” “Director,” “Believe,” “Blow Ya Mind,” Feel For You,” “End of the Line,” “Erika Kane,” “Driving Down The Darkness,” “Lesson Learned,” “Living My Life” and Hood Love.”

This is the second time in 2021 the Top Dawg Entertainment rapper has shared updates concerning his next body of work. On New Year’s Day, the introspective lyricist announced on Twitter that his album is on the way. He also ended up hinting at the possibilities of Kendrick Lamar’s album dropping soon as well.

“Yea the album is on the way, you knew that…” He wrote, before a fan asked if that’s the case with Kendrick, and Ab-Soul simply replied, “Yup.”

It’s been five years since the California artist dropped his last album, Do What Thou Wilt, which was released in 2016. He’s not the only one from TDE to go on a musical hiatus for a while. With the exception of REASON who dropped his New Beginnings album last year, artists like Kendrick and SZA haven’t released albums since their 2017 DAMN and CTRL respective albums.

In mid-January, TDE’s head, Punch, shared on Twitter that he’s in the studio with Ab-Soul, exposing him for covering his iPhone camera to keep the recording process top secret. “In the studio with @abdashsoul,” he wrote. “My Mans got duck tape covering the cameras on his iPhone. Lol.” He quickly rectified his spelling with “duct” in another tweet.
