Snoop reveals plans to bring 213’s The Hard Way and Nate Dogg’s unreleased material to streaming platforms

Snoop Dogg has big plans for the legacy of 213, the supergroup he formed with Nate Dogg and Warren G, as well as for the late Nate Dogg’s extensive collection of unreleased music. During a recent appearance on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, Snoop shared his intention to reclaim and remaster 213’s debut album, The Hard Way, with hopes of releasing it through Death Row Records, the label he now controls.

Snoop explained that TVT Records, which originally held the rights to the album, went bankrupt, making it difficult to release the project. Now, with the opportunity to regain control, Snoop plans to remaster and release The Hard Way through Death Row, bringing it to a new generation of listeners.

Additionally, Snoop spoke about Nate Dogg’s unreleased music, revealing that both Warren G and Fredwreck have a substantial amount of material from Nate that has yet to see the light of day. He explained how Nate had a tireless work ethic, similar to 2Pac, and recorded countless songs with various collaborators, including Warren G and Fredwreck. Snoop expressed his desire to release some of this unreleased material through Death Row, a tribute to Nate Dogg’s enduring influence on hip-hop.

Snoop also emphasized his strong relationship with Nate Dogg’s mother, Miss Ruth, adding that she supports the idea of bringing Nate’s music to fans properly and respectfully. Fans of Nate Dogg, Warren G, and Snoop Dogg can likely expect some exciting new releases from the iconic West Coast trio shortly.

Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, and Warren G were once in a local rap group named 213, which was L.A.’s original telephone area code.

The rap trio started in 1992 and they first appeared together on “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” from Snoop Dogg’s solo debut album Doggystyle, which also featured Kurupt of Tha Dogg Pound. The groups name was inspired by oakland rap group 415.

In 1994, 213 released their EP “St. Ides EP.”

In 2004, 213 released their only album “The Hard Way” which peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

213 was me, Snoop, and Nate. That was my crew. We fell in love with [the group] 415 — Richie Rich, D-Loc and those guys in Oakland. So we was like, “Man, they 415, that’s they area code. So we might as well call ourselves 213 and represent from where we from down here.” Warren G told Rolling Stone

Warren G sampled a VCR for the beginning of the 1994 hit “Regulate” using an Akai MPC60 and his cousin Nate Dogg recorded his vocals in a closet due to lack of furniture in Warren’s two bedroom Long Beach apartment. The vocals you hear on the album version of “Regulate” were the original closet recording. The song appeared on the soundtrack to the film Above the Rim and the music video also featured scenes from the movie.

During an interview with DJ Skee, Warren G revealed details about the recording process “Regulate.”

“I had an apartment on Long Beach Boulevard and San Antonio, and I didn’t have no furniture. I had dog shit all over the floor, and I had two bedrooms. In one of my bedrooms, all I had was studio equipment. I did the sample, plugged my VCR into the MPC60, sampled [the intro], and after I finished it, I called Nate, and said ‘Nate, I got a record I think we should do, and go back-and-forth on it. I think it’d be dope.’

“Nate came over, heard it, and was like, ‘Damn!’ So from there, we hooked up a mic in the closet, and I called my engineer, Greg. He came over and recorded it, and there it is.”

“As long as you got somebody who can mix, it’s gonna be alright.” – Warren G
