André 3000 Reveals He Wanted His Verse Removed from Kanye West’s ‘Life of the Party’

The OutKast legend talks about his creative differences with Ye and his thoughts on Drizzy leaking the track

André 3000 has opened up about his experience with Kanye West’s track “Life of the Party,” revealing that he initially wanted his verse removed from the song due to creative differences with Kanye’s vision for the track. Speaking on The New York Times’ Popcast, the OutKast legend shared that Kanye had decided to exclude any explicit language from Donda, which led to André requesting his verse be taken off the song.

“Kanye was at a point in his life where he didn’t want any curse words on the album and I said, ‘Yeah, I’m cool with it, man. I’m totally fine with no curse words. But take me off the song,’” André explained. “I had written it a certain way… but I said, ‘You have to put the dirty version out, too.’” Kanye, however, was firm in his decision to not include any curse words on the album, explaining that he had promised his daughter no explicit language would be featured on the project.

3 Stacks respected Ye’s decision and agreed to have his verse removed rather than alter it to fit the clean version. “We weren’t in agreement with how the song would come out,” he said.

The track, which was initially left off Donda, eventually gained attention when it was leaked by Drake during his feud with Kanye. André revealed that he was aware of Kanye’s disses aimed at Drake in the song before its release. “I want to clear something up: a lot of people think that Kanye took the song and put the diss part out without me knowing about it. I’d heard the diss part and me and Kanye had a conversation about it,” he said.

Reflecting on Kanye’s decision to include the diss, André expressed his reservations. “I was like, ‘Man, do you really want to do this on this type of song? It’s kinda like going and shooting up your mom’s funeral,’” he said, explaining that he didn’t feel the diss was appropriate for the track’s vibe.

Though he had no idea how Drake got ahold of the track, André admitted he was grateful for the leak. “I was like, ‘Woah!’ I actually don’t understand why he did it, but I kind of have to thank Drake for letting that song see the light of day,” he said, showing his appreciation for the song finally being heard by the public.

3K didn’t plan to make jazz album

André 3000 released his first ever solo album last year titled, New Blue Sun. To the surprise of many, the LP saw the Outkast rapper entirely playing flute instead of rapping. A clip has been surfacing of 3 Stacks recently explaining onstage how the album came about.

“‘How you just gon’ be rapping and then just get on stage playing f*cking flutes?” 3K asked. “Like, I didn’t plan to be the flute n*gga. I didn’t plan to be that. It just kinda, like, it happened. When I started rapping, I didn’t know what it would be. It was just me and Big Boi at the crib watching rap videos. We all freestyling. We all making this shit up as we go along. We have intentions but we don’t really know.”

Andrew shares some details about his new album

Andrew 3000 released his debut solo album the New Blue Sun in late November and during an interview with Citizen Magazine, he explained that he initially had a different title for the project.

“We’re the loudest that we’ve ever been,” 3 Stacks explained. “At one point, the album was called Everything Is Too Loud. But then I just felt like that’s a negative title. You know? I didn’t want to put negative energy out. So I was like, ‘What’s a positive way to say the same thing?’ So New Blue Sun is introducing a new kind of volume, you know? It’s looking past the complaint and trying to figure out, well, what can we do about it?”

Logic explains how he created his new album, College Park, revealing he drew some inspiration from Andre 3000. The Maryland native shared a video on YouTube on Thursday (March 23) revealing that the album was initially a Rock effort, and was in part influenced by Andre’s “weird” voice. “This is back when the fucking album was half rock and roll,” Logic expounded. “I was like, ‘Alright, let’s start it out with some weird shit. So the album starts really weird and different, but it’s cool, though, and then it’s like some weird vocally [André 3000], OutKast vibe. I’m rapping, then out of nowhere the RZA comes in and starts rapping about COVID.”

He added, “so he’s rapping and I’m like, ‘Okay, what the fuck is this song?’ Then I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what if this song is a dream sequence in a day in the life of me and my homies in Compton … driving in 2011 to an open mic night? Then I get to get away with this really weird intro that’s dope as fuck and make it a dream about how Logic is waking up?

Mr. Benjamin says “Alright” 14 times in a row, making it one of the most repeated lyrics in a rap song.

The track was on the double OutKast album Speakerboxx/ The Love Below but the lyrical reference of repeating the word alright comes from the opening song “Gasoline Dreams” from the group’s previous album, Stankonia. The repetitive lyric has since become a popular meme.
