Producer Calls Abel’s Latest Album “Album of the Year” and Lauds Mike Dean’s Contributions

Metro Boomin had nothing but high praise for The Weeknd and legendary producer Mike Dean after the release of Hurry Up Tomorrow, the Canadian singer’s latest and potentially final album. Following its midnight drop on January 31, Metro took to social media to express his admiration.

“Only this n-gga Abel could drop album of the year in January lmao,” Metro wrote on X, celebrating the album’s impact. He continued, giving a shout-out to Mike Dean, who played a massive role in the project’s production. “Mike Dean sitting high on that all-time producer/composer list for sure,” he added.

Dean mixed, mastered, and co-produced nearly all of the 24 tracks on the album, while Metro contributed production to several key songs, including “Cry For Me,” “Given Up On Me,” and “The Abyss.”

The 22-track album serves as the final chapter of The Weeknd’s trilogy, following After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022). It’s also billed as The Weeknd’s potential swan song, with the closing track seamlessly transitioning into “High For This” from his debut mixtape, bringing his career full circle. Fans have celebrated the clever sonic easter egg, with many calling the album’s ending an emotional tie to his early work.

Madlib & Mike Dean have made hits with iPads in the past

Technological advancement has allowed artists and producers to make hits on the go, and acclaimed producers Madlib and Mike Dean have taken advantage of it. On Monday (December 12), Our Generation Music shared a clip from an old Madlib interview with the Red Bull Music Academy where he revealed that Kanye West’s “No More Parties In LA” was made on an iPad.
“Actually, that beat was made off by a iPad,” Madlib told the host about The Life Of Pablo track, to which he replied, “Thank God for the iPad.”

Madlib added in the 2016 interview, “Every time I sample a record I do the whole record. I made beats of a whole record.”

Mike Dean spotted the OGM post on Instagram and jumped on the comments to share his own experience with making instruments on iPads. The Houston producer disclosed that parts of Ye’s “N*ggas In Parris” beat were made on his iPad, particularly “chops and drum endings” on the “ball so hard” segment.

“N IN PARIS ball so hard chop and ending drums were done on my iPad,” Dean wrote.
