Tariq Luqmaan Trotter was born on October 3, 1972. The Philly wordsmith’s known as “Black Thought” and he founded The Roots with fellow musician Questlove. He is known for his super lyrical abilities, effortless flow, and powerful stage presence.

The son of Cassandra and Thomas, Thought grew up in the Nation of Islam. Sadly, both his parents were murdered. His father when he was one and his mother while in high school. He found strength in his gifts and rap gained him entry to the world of hip hop.

“I don’t think there’s no rapper more street than me. I’m street Street. Both my parents murder victims. I’ve done lived. I can talk about it but it’s not what defines me… It’s not what I wear on my sleeve. I’d rather wear my intelligence and my artistry on my sleeve. I’m definitely one of the best rappers. That’s just what it is.”

2009 was the year The Roots started as the official house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Their song “Here I Come” even played as the show’s theme music. Later, Jimmy Fallon landed the host gig of The Tonight Show in February 2014, and The Roots came along as the house band for that show on NBC. Black Thought has had many memorble moments as the house emcee.

He released a series of solo projects entitled Streams of Thought starting in 2018. He has remained an active feature guest in recent years and has acted in several films. He is a father and his family has had a positive impact on his lifestyle. With the combination of his undeniable pen and activist views, Back Thought ranks in the top 5 rappers for many hip hop fans.
