Hov thought a rap verse wasn’t necessary on “Shape of You”

Ed Sheeran reveals that he wanted Jay-Z to drop a verse on his 2017 mega hit, “Shape of You,” but Hov didn’t see the necessity. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Ed shared that he reached out to Jay for a verse but the billionaire felt the song was okay without a rap verse.

“We were in touch,” Ed recalled. “I sent him the song, and he said, ‘I don’t think the song needs a rap verse.’ He was probably right. He’s got a very, very good ear. He usually gets things right. It was a very natural, respectful pass.”
