Questlove’s awaited documentary SLY LIVES! is set to make its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2025 next month.
Announced as back in 2022, this film is Questlove’s return to directing filmmaking after his Oscar-winning debut Summer of Soul. The Utah-based event kicks off on January 23, with SLY LIVES! as a marquee feature.
“It’s time, good people. It’s official!” Questlove shared on Instagram. “SLY LIVES! (AKA The Burden of Black Genius) will premiere at the 2025 #Sundance Film Festival.”
This documentary promises to explore everything Sly Stone—the funk legend’s life, music, and influence on culture. According to its official description, “it speaks to the challenges of Black artists seeking to define success for themselves,” which makes a revealing view into Stone’s path-blazing career and lasting children.
With SLY LIVES!, Questlove continues his campaign to document and commemorate Black musical heritage via the medium of filmmaking. Excitement from fans and critics alike is palpable.
