The Bronx legend admits some new rap sounds leave him feeling ‘confused’ and nostalgic for the genre’s past

Fat Joe has opened up about his confusion with today’s Hip Hop, expressing that some of the sounds from younger artists leave him puzzled. In a recent interview with Complex, the Bronx legend confessed he doesn’t always relate to the current direction of rap music, especially regarding New York’s evolving scene.

“I’ve sat in traffic and heard the music… I felt like they were playing devil music right next to me,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Yo, what the f**k? That’s Hip Hop?’” While Joe made it clear that he respects the new generation, he admitted that some repetitive beats and lyrics make him feel disconnected.

He also compared the love songs of the past to today’s approach, noting how today’s love tracks often feature violent lyrics over similar beats. In contrast, in the past, artists like LL Cool J would serenade listeners with heartfelt, introspective lines.

Joe even ruled out the possibility of jumping on a “sexy drill” track, adding that he’d prefer a love song with Babyface. The veteran is sticking to his roots, while some of today’s trends aren’t resonating with him.
