    Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson in 1992. He is from Brampton, Canada, and is known for his solo albums mixtapes, and rap features. He’s worked with Drake, Meek Mill, Sean Paul, and others.

    Outside of music, Lanez is well known for an alleged altercation with fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion. She said he shot her in the foot after attending a party at Kylie Jenner’s house in 2020. He has continued to make hit records but has faced scrutiny online.

He met Black Rob and Busta Rhymes who helped him get a deal with Jive.

He was also featured in Ciara’s song “Goodies.” After leaving Jive sometime after 2006, he founded Carolina Music Group as his independent record label. He has had some legal issues and served some jail time in 2012 but as of 2022, he is a free man.

    New York rapper Kool G Rap was born Nathaniel Thomas Wilson in 1968. He was raised in Corona, Queens, and ran with producer Eric B. before connecting with DJ Polo as a duo and joining the Juice Crew. He’s worked with Mobb Deep, Nas, and a host of other rappers and producers like Marley Marl, and Buckwild.

    His mafioso rap is credited with influencing rappers like Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, Wu-Tang Clan, and a host of others. He was gangster rap before NWA, arriving on the rap scene in 1986, a year before the West Coast supergroup. His first solo album 4, 5, 6 dropped in 1995. His 2017 release is titled Return of the Don.

    Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert updated their social media over the weekend (July 17) by changing their pronouns to the non-binary They/ Them on Instagram. The move establishes the artist as not conforming to male and female gender roles. Other artists that identify as non-binary include Kehlani, Janelle Monae, and others.

    A style icon for the last few years, Vert’s well known for freely dancing and celebrating his designer lifestyle in song and real life. It looks like they’re embracing their identity more fully now. The news arrives with new music. Vert dropped “I Know” with Sonny Digital on his SoundCloud.

    Kodak Black was arrested and released on a felony drug charge

    Kodak Black was pulled over in Florida and arrested on Friday (July 15) for possession of 30+ oxy pills and several over $70,000 in cash. He was released on $75,000 bail and as being charged with trafficking. His Durango was pulled over for expired tags and tints and then the pills and cash were discovered.

    This isn’t Black’s first run-in with the law. In 2019 his sentence for a firearm offense was commuted on President Trump’s last day in office. He’s also faced sexual abuse allegations and his rap sheet stretches back to 2015 with charges ranging from marijuana possession to kidnapping.

    He’s seen recent success as a featured artist on Kendrick Lamar’s latest album.

    Before No Limit Records was a New Orleans phenomenon, it was a record store in Richmond, CA. Percy Miller, aka Master P, used money from a settlement in 1991 to open No Limit Record Shop through which he distributed his early music.

    Around this same time, Tupac Shakur aka 2Pac was a rising star in the Bay Area. P stated he used to open to Pac in the Bay. “It was crazy, because everyone was there to see Tupac. They didn’t care about me…”Later, Master P made a tribute record to the late rapper. It’s called “R.I.P. Tupac” and was featured on the 1997 album West Coast Bad Boyz.

    BROCKHAMPTON was originally called AliveSinceForever

    BROCKHAMPTON was formed in 2010 and the band was originally called AliveSinceForever. It was founded by Kevin Abstract, Ameer Vann, Joba, Matt Champion, and Merlyn Wood in Texas. They all went to high school together and after Abstract made a post on Kanye’s message boards asking if anyone wanted to be in a band, 30 people replied, and in 2012 AliceSinceForever was born.

    The group disbanded shortly after and rebranded as BROCKHAMPTON and later signed to RCA. Their albums include Saturation I, II, and III, Iridescence, and Ginger among others, as well as solo projects from some members. They’ve toured extensively and been on late-night shows like Jimmy Fallon.

    Ameer Vann would leave the group in 2018 after being accused of sexual misconduct and emotional abuse by several women. This led to the shelving of the fourth album Puppy. The group announced that they would disband in 2022 and their final album would arrive that year as well.

    BROCKHAMPTON founder Kevin Abstract was born on July 16, 1996. The rapper’s real name is Clifford Ian Simpson and he is from Corpus Christi, TX. His early life was marked by separation from his family due to his sexuality. He started making music at 11 and ran away at 15 then moved to Georgia to live with his sister. He’s openly gay.

    He founded BROCKHAMPTON in 2010 and is the creative mind behind the hip-hop boy band from San Marcos, TX. The band played Coachella in 2022 and announced that they were splitting up and their final album would be out the same year.

    In addition to his BROCKHAMPTON work, he’s released several solo projects including MTV1987 and Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story.
