    Guru was born on July 16, 1961, in the Roxbury area of Boston, MA. Keith Edward Elam aka Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal was one half of the rap duo Gang Starr. He graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta and moved to New York where he met DJ Premier on Wild Pitch records. He was known for his insightful, philosophical rhymes and monotone flow.

    Jazzmatazz Vols 1-4 were rap jazz albums produced by Guru outside of Gang Starr. They featured jazz artists like Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Hancock with rappers like The Roots and neo-soul singers Erykah Badu.

    In 2010, Guru passed away from a heart attack following a surgical procedure. He was in a coma for some time and according to his family, never regained consciousness.

    Brian Daniel Carenard aka Saigon is an underground legend. His album The Greatest Story Never Told dropped in 2011 after a long and bitter feud with Atlantic Records. He had a recurring role on HBO’s Entourage and has worked with Kanye West, Jay-Z, and other A-List rappers. He’s African American and Haitian.

    Saigon went to jail in the late ’90s and picked up rap while inside. He was released in 2000 and got signed to Atlantic but creative differences prevented the release of his album. He is now signed to Strange Music, home of Tech N9ine.

    Kimberly Denise Jones aka Lil Kim was born in NYC in 1974. She is best known for her work with Notorious B.I.G. and Bad Boy Records. She is from Brooklyn and got into rap as part of Junoir M.A.F.I.A. and released her solo debut Hard Core in 1996.

    Kim’s worked with Diddy, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Da Brat, and more. In 2005 she served a year in jail for perjury charges. She has become more involved in fashion over the years and is still active as a rapper. More recently she’s worked with Fabolous, Faith Evans, and Remy Ma.

    She is known as the Queen Bee and is also given the title “Queen of Rap” as well. In 2019 she was honored with the I Am Hip Hop Award at the BET Hip Hop Honors.

    Jaden was born in Malibu in 1998. He’s the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and brother to Williow Smith. He got his start in acting and turned to music after starring alongside his father in The Pursuit of Happiness and After Earth. He started rapping in 2013 and released the album Syre in 2017. The follow-up Erys was released in 2019.

    Jaden is known for his voice acting and fashion in addition to rapping and acting. His nonbinary fashion statements and joke flirting with Tyler the Creator had social media users shaking their heads. He’s dated several high-profile girlfriends including Kylie Jenner and Haily Baldwin.

    YNW Melly no longer faces the death penalty

    In a development in YNW Melly’s murder trial, he will no longer face capital punishment and instead faces life in prison if convicted of the killings of his friends YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy.

    The filing says: “The State must additionally now prove that the Defendant committed the charged offenses for the of purpose benefiting, promoting, or furthering the interests of a criminal gang, which was never alleged in the original Indictment. Since the 45-day Notice of Intent to Seek Death has expired, the State should therefore be precluded from seeking a penalty of death in this cause.”

    He was arrested in 2019 and has remained in jail with a pending trial date. He had COVID-19 in 2020 and petitioned for an early releaser but was denied. Since his trial date keeps getting delayed, his legal team has demanded a speedy trial in the next few months.

    During the 2022 Openair Frauenfeld Festival in Switzerland this Wednesday (July 6), Playboi Carti jumped in to save a couple of fans from being roughed up by security. After the scuffle, Carti kissed and hugged another male fan before disappearing off stage. The clip has gone viral. Later in the show, he stopped to help the crowd to hydrate.

    With regard to his sexuality, Carti told Highsnobiety, “I’m not going out my way to have people like, ‘Oh, what the fuck’s Carti on? Is he gay, or is he trolling?’ No, bro — I don’t give a fuck. I’m being myself. I hate that I waited so long to be myself. I wish I came in like this.”

    A couple of days earlier, Carti fell off the stage at the Wireless Festival in the UK. While his balance may be off, he seems to be having a good time sharing the love on tour.

    ‘Rap sh!t’ new HBO show by Issa Rae and City Girls

    Since “Insecure” ended, Issa Rae’s been working on a new show dripping on HBO Max. The project is called “Rap Sh!t” and was developed with Miami rap duo City Girls as co-executive producers. The story takes place in Miami and is similar to how JT and Young Miami connected.

    According to Variety, “The series follows two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion). The two reunite to form a rap group, forming a new bond along the way. The series also stars Jonica Booth, Devon Terrell and RJ Cyler.” Rae wrote the pilot and collaborated with showrunner Syreeta Singleton on the finale. “Rap Sh!t” drops July 21.

    Nipsey Hussle’s killer convicted of 1st Degree Murder

    Eric Holder shot and killed Nipsey Hussle on March 31, 2019, in front of his Marathon clothing store in Los Angeles. Today (July 6) he was found guilty of premeditated murder by a jury. Sentencing is forthcoming from the judge in the trial.

    Nipsey Hussle was a Grammy-nominated rapper and entrepreneur. He was also a member of the Rollin’ 60s Crips. Holder, a fellow gang member, and aspiring rapper, shot Hussle after a verbal altercation that same day. He also shot two of Hussle’s associates and is facing those charges as well.
