R&B icons confirm new music is on the way and reflect on iconic hit’s unexpected origins

Brandy and Monica are back — and with a surprising revelation about the inspiration behind their legendary hit “The Boy Is Mine.” The duo appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss their newly announced reunion tour and confirmed that new music is officially in the works.

During their interview, Brandy revealed that the concept for their 1998 No. 1 hit came directly from watching The Jerry Springer Show, the notorious daytime talk show known for its chaotic relationship drama.
“I was a huge Jerry Springer fan,” Brandy said. “One of the topics was ‘The boy is mine,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. Song idea. Let’s do this.’”

Monica added that they plan to return to the studio soon:
“We’ll start working on some music immediately. Then we can just be promoting it when we’re on the road. But no studio tour bus. That’s for the rappers.”

The music video for “The Boy Is Mine” even nods to its TV origins, opening with Brandy watching an episode of Jerry Springer.

Their reunion comes after a rocky history, including a public moment last year when Monica criticized Brandy’s brother Ray J for speaking publicly about tour plans without consulting them. Monica emphasized the importance of respect and privacy, writing:
“She [Brandy] and I are both consummate professionals… Please allow this to remain positive and beautiful.”

Despite past tension, both stars are now aligned and ready to celebrate their shared legacy — with new music, live performances, and a fresh chapter in one of R&B’s most iconic partnerships.
