Gambino reveals “This Is America” started in a “funny” way

Childish Gambino makes some interesting details about the making of his 2018 hit “This Is America.” During his appearance on GQ’s recent cover, Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, shared that he began the record as a diss towards Drake but he later realized its potential and made it a full song.

“To be completely honest, ‘This is America’—that was all we had was that line,” Gambino said. “It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.”
