    Pimp C was born on December 29

    On December 29, 1973, Chad Mathew Lamont Butler aka Pimp C was born in Port Arthur, TX. He would become a founding member of hip-hop duo UGK or Underground Kings. His flow and signature swag was the epitome of the H-Town style that became wildly popular in the 1990s. He was featured on Jay-Z’s Big Pimpin’ and Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You) by UGK featuring Outkast.

    Sadly, Pimp C passed away in 2007 at the age of 33. He accidentally overdosed on cough syrup because he had sleep apnea, a condition that causes blocked airways during sleep. He was on tour with Too Short when he passed in West Hollywood hotel. His impact on Southern rap and Housten’s street culture was incalculable. He left behind a wife and three sons.

    Mr. Lif was born December 28

    Boston rapper Mr. Lif was born in 1977. He has long been an underground favorite with highlights including I, Phantom. Born Jeffrey Haynes, Lif released his first two albums on Definitive Jux in the early 2000s. His thoughtful flow has a long lyrical legacy in rap circles from coast to coast.

    El-P produced some of his early work on Def Jux. He is also a touring member of Thievery Corporation and he’s a frequent collaborator with Akrobatik. His family comes from Bajan ancestry.

    The one and only Phonte Lyshod Coleman was born on December 28, 1978, in Greensboro, NC. He was part of the rap group Little Brother with fellow emcee Big Pooh. Their early work was produced by 9th Wonder and later Justus League and Khrysis among others.

    He’s also half of the duo The Foreign Exchange with Dutch producer Nicolay. The two met on chat boards at The Roots’ website OkayPlayer.com and notoriously completed an album without ever meeting in person. He has solo projects as well.

    Phonte has worked with artists including Drake, The Roots, Royce da 5’9″, Mac Miller, and others. His style is comprised of witty wordplay and a strong singing voice, primarily on hooks. He’s been active in the rap world since 1998 as a student at North Carolina Central University. Some of his notable works include Little Brother’s The Listening and The Foreign Exchange’s Connected among numerous other albums and features.

    Miami bass godfather Uncle Luke aka Luke Campbell was born in 1960. Real name Luther Roderick Campbell, he’s discovered The 2 Live Crew, the controversial rap group he became a member of that went all the way to the supreme court. He is a record producer, rapper, and media personality. He got his start promoting shows in Miami during the 1980s.

    In addition to rapping, Luke has ventures ranging from promoting to adult entertainment. He is a father to multiple children and has starred in several films and reality shows. Many see his stance on free speech as more important than the music he made but either way, he helped defend the culture’s right to self-expression and he became a legend in the process. Long live Uncle Luke!

    DaBaby was born on Dec 22nd

    DaBaby, born Jonathan Lyndale Kirk, was born in the winter of 1991 in Cleveland, OH. He came to fame with his top ten hit song “Suge” in 2019. He has become a heavily featured remix rapper and pop-crossover superstar, working with Dua Lipa and others. His label Billion Dollar Baby was started in Charlotte, NC in 2017.

    His past became the subject of Dave Chapelle’s comedy on the Netflix special “The Closer.” Like Dave, Da Baby got a major dose of cancel culture after his outburst at Rolling Loud Miami in 2021, as well as previous incidents including hitting a female fan and a misdemeanor gun charge related to killing someone at a Huntersville Walmart where Da Baby was shopping with his family in November of 2018.

    His name was in the news again for problems he was having with the fellow artist and mother to his child, Dani Leigh after he tried to have the police put her out and then brought it up on an Instagram live. Even with obvious setbacks, his fame has continued to rise and he’s made appearances on Kanye West‘s Donda as well as other high-profile projects.

    DMX was born on December 18

    Earl Simmons, later known as DMX, was born in Mount Vernon, NY in 1970. He came to fame signed to Def Jam and Ruff Ryders during the 1990s. His albums It’s Dark and Hell is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood solidified him as a rap legend.

    His gritty flow and raw storytelling quickly set him apart from other rappers and he continued to make hits into the 2000s. He often talked about his struggles as a child and young adult with gun violence and drug abuse mixed with spirituality and redemption emerging as themes. X struggled with addiction and tragically passed away in 2021. He released a posthumous album entitled Exodus.

    Bushwick Bill, real name Richard William Stephen Shaw, was born in 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a founding member of the Geto Boys. The rapper shot himself in the eye during an argument with his girlfriend. He later became a born-again Christian.

    While a member of Geto Boys, Bushwick Bill delivered memorable performances on the song “Mind Playing Tricks on Me” among others. He was born with dwarfism, a condition he got from his mother. Bill died of pancreatic cancer in 2019. His lyrics were an early example of Horrorcore rap.

    Masta Ace, real name Duval Clear, was born in 1966 in Brooklyn, NY. He got his start in the 1980s with the Juice Crew and Marley Mar’s Cold Chillin label. In 1995 he released Sittin’ On Chrome, his most popular and commercially accessible album. 2001’s Disposable Arts later became something of an underground classic.

    Many credit Ace with influencing artists like Eminem and others. He’s an innovator as an artist-producer that works hands-on behind the scenes. He’s worked with Marco Polo, DJ Premier, and Large Professor. His style is hardcore hip hop.
