He was raised in Corona, Queens, and ran with producer Eric B. before connecting with DJ Polo as a duo and joining the Juice Crew. He’s worked with Mobb Deep, Nas, and a host of other rappers and producers like Marley Marl, and Buckwild.

    His mafioso rap is credited with influencing rappers like Biggie, Nas, Jay Z, Wu-Tang Clan, and a host of others. He was gangster rap before NWA, arriving on the rap scene in 1986, a year before the West Coast supergroup. His first solo album 4, 5, 6 dropped in 1995. His 2017 release is titled Return of the Don.

His early life was marked by separation from his family due to his sexuality. He started making music at 11 and ran away at 15 then moved to Georgia to live with his sister. He’s openly gay.

    He founded BROCKHAMPTON in 2010 and is the creative mind behind the hip-hop boy band from San Marcos, TX. The band played Coachella in 2022 and announced that they were splitting up and their final album would be out the same year.

    In addition to his BROCKHAMPTON work, he’s released several solo projects including MTV1987 and Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story.

He graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta and moved to New York where he met DJ Premier on Wild Pitch records. He was known for his insightful, philosophical rhymes and monotone flow.

    Jazzmatazz Vols 1-4 were rap jazz albums produced by Guru outside of Gang Starr. They featured jazz artists like Ramsey Lewis and Herbie Hancock with rappers like The Roots and neo-soul singers Erykah Badu.

    In 2010, Guru passed away from a heart attack following a surgical procedure. He was in a coma for some time and according to his family, never regained consciousness.
