The Breaks, released on June 14, 1980, by Kurtis Blow, was the first hip-hop single to go gold. The Breaks was produced by J.B. Moore & Robert Ford Jr. The song was released on Kurtis Blow‘s self-titled major label debut album “Kurtis Blow.”
The Breaks spent six weeks on the charts and peaked at No. 87 on the billboard Hot 100. The single was the first certified gold rap song, and the second certified gold 12-inch song/single in the history of music.
The Breaks was also the first rap song to have a chorus.
