  • Jeezy goes back to his roots on his new album, “TM104”

Jeezy goes back to his roots on his new album, “TM104”

    TM104: Legend of the Snowman

Jeezy is finally ending his “Thug Motivation” album series. TM 104: Legend of the Snowman is the end of an era for the icon from South Carolina, as it is his last record with Def Jam and his record of the series that made him so big to begin with. On this record, Jeezy seems to really embrace his roots. Although there are a few newer style trap cuts as one would expect, a lot of the instrumentals on this record remind me a lot of his music from the mid 2000s. I love the minimalist melodies and low key beats that focus on Jeezy’s lyrical content and stories.

One of my favorite tracks on the record that takes this style is ‘Fake Love,’ which features a beautifully sung chorus from Queen Naija. On this track, Jeezy tells the story of quite a few of his friends that have been less than faithful to him when he has struggled, only liking him for his money. I really recommend this song! Check out ‘Fake Love’ and the rest of the album with the Spotify below!

  • Brockhampton embraces the “boy band” persona more than ever on ‘Ginger’

Brockhampton embraces the “boy band” persona more than ever on ‘Ginger’

    Ginger cover art

It seems like the always-evolving group Brockhampton never stops to rest. Ginger, the latest effort by the self-proclaimed boy band, is already this group’s fifth album to be released in the last two and a half years. One thing I have always appreciated about these guys is the fact that every album is so different; not only does all of their album have different underlying themes and meanings, every album pushes the envelope sonically in a way that is more intense than most other hip hop artists that are making music these days.

On Ginger, Brockhampton seems to embrace a softer and more sweet side than they have in the past, with quite a few pop/R&B cuts that remind me of boy bands like LANY or AJR. Of course, because of artists like Joba and Merlyn, this record has plenty of intense moments as well; fans of the weird hardcore hip hop that Brockhampton has tended to make in the past will not be disappointed. Overall, Brockhampton continues to show why they are so unique on Ginger, but they are continuing to find a way to make their weirdness more accepted in the mainstream.

  • Wale Celebrates Black Women on “BGM” Track

Wale Celebrates Black Women on “BGM” Track

First, Wale shared the single “Gemini (2 Sides)“. From there, he released “On Chill” with Jeremih. Now, here we are on August 26 with his new single, “BGM.”

“BGM,” standing for “Black Girl Magic,” is wedding approved. It’s no secret that Wale’s pen moves for a woman and they’re his strongest muse, especially the black woman. On “BGM,” Wale beautifully displays his appreciation for the black woman. It’s different than any other single he’s ever shared with the masses, but it doesn’t find him in an uncomfortable pocket. He’s right at home, rapping, and vocalizing, about the black queens of the world.

He’s in hope that someone like her will like him and hopefully build a bond.

  • Young Thug’s ‘So Much Fun’ Album Updated With Machine Gun Kelly Feature on “Ecstasy”

Young Thug’s ‘So Much Fun’ Album Updated With Machine Gun Kelly Feature on “Ecstasy”

On August 16, Young Thug released his debut studio album, So Much Fun, an album complete with producers and artists we’re familiar with, but there’s new joy to be found on each track.

The album is complete with 19 tracks. Features include: Gunna, Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Doe Boy, Lil Keed, Lil Uzi Vert and Duke, and Machine Gun Kelly.

Machine Gun Kelly was actually a missing piece to the album’s completion. Thug stated in an interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood, the verse (suppose to be on “Ecstasy”) didn’t make it on the album due to Thug’s engineer turning in the album and forgetting to add Machine Gun Kelly’s verse.

The new version of “Ecstasy” may find some people upset, seeing as though there’s a Young Thug verse that is no longer on the album. It was important for this version to come to fruition because the two will be joining forces for a fall tour.

You can still listen to the original version of “Ecstasy” below, as well as the updated version.

With lack of physical copies being sold, the change doesn’t truly interfere with anything. Thug’s album debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard charts with 128,000 units sold.

  • The Charts: Rick Ross, Trippie Redd, and the end of ‘Old Town Road’

The Charts: Rick Ross, Trippie Redd, and the end of ‘Old Town Road’

Rick Ross Port of Miami 2 first week sales

Rick RossPort of Miami 2 sold just under 72,000 albums in its first week, strong enough to earn #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. This is the Miami rapper’s tenth top 10 album, a true testament to the longevity of his career.

Trippie Redd ! first week sales

Trippie Redd‘s ! sold 51,000 the first week, earning the #3 spot on the Billboard 200. Despite some issues with the album being available on streaming services (including the removal of “They Afraid of You” featuring Playboi Carti), the album was able to accumulate a respectable number of streams and sales.

The Charts: Rick Ross, Trippie Redd, and the end of 'Old Town Road'

After a record-setting 19 weeks at #1, Lil Nas X‘s “Old Town Road” finally fell out of the top spot to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Billie Eilish achieved her first #1 song and became the first artist born in the 2000s to achieve this. Lizzo, Chris Brown, Drake, Post Malone, and Young Thug all held their spots in the top 10, giving hip-hop another strong showing.

Bazzi, Blueface, Ugly god, Lil Tjay first week sales

Rick Ross and Trippie Redd weren’t the only hip-hop artists to release a new project last week. Bazzi debuted at #20 with Soul Searching, Lil Tjay’s F.N was #38, Ugly God’s first album Bumps & Bruises earned the #46 spot, and Blueface’s EP Dirt Bag finished #48.

Check back next week to see how well projects from Young Thug, Quality Control, and A$AP Ferg perform in their first week. Currently, Young Thug is on pace to debut at #1 with over 150,000 units.

Young Thug helps his label mates shine on "So Much Fun"

Young Thug has just officially dropped what is being considered his debut album, So Much Fun, and it is receiving all of the praise that it deserves. At 19 songs, this project is a roller coaster and does not get boring at all; every song is different and unique enough that nothing on this project feels stagnant to me at all. Young Thug really is on top form for all of this album; there are so many different vocal styles and melodies sometimes it seems like it is not even Young Thug rapping.

One of my favorite things about the record is how many songs contain Young Thug’s YSL label mates. Young Thug always does a great job of showcasing the up and coming artists he surrounds himself with on all of his projects, and so much fun is a prime example of that. The songs on So Much Fun that feature YSL artists are: ‘Hot,’ featuring Gunna, ‘Surf,’ featuring Gunna, ‘I Bought Her,’ featuring Lil Duke, ‘Cartier Gucci Scarf,’ featuring Lil Duke, and ‘Big Tipper,’ which features Lil Keed.

Although all of these songs are very good(honestly the whole album is just very good), my favorites are definitely ‘Cartier Gucci Scarf’ and ‘Big Tipper.’ Both of these tracks have instrumentals that go so damn hard, and the vocal fluctuation and vocal contrasts provided by Keed and Duke on these songs make them so enjoyable and different. If you want to check these tracks out or want to hear any more of this excellent album, check them out below!

  • Stream A$AP Ferg’s new album “Floor Seats”

Stream A$AP Ferg’s new album “Floor Seats”

Stream A$AP Ferg's new album "Floor Seats"

A$AP Ferg has finally released his highly anticipated new project, Floor Seats, and it does not disappoint in any way. This project is very short and to the point; at 9 songs, it is full to the brim with energy and diversity, and does not sound too bulky or repetitive as a lot of newer rap albums tend to sound. The instrumentals on this project are super cool and unique; most songs on the record have a heavy and distorted trap feeling to them, but they also are very retro New York sounding as well.

A lot of the instrumentals have melodies and horns that remind me a lot of songs by Jim Jones or 50 Cent in the early 2000s. This album is full of great features as well; A$AP Rocky, Rico Nasty, Asian Doll, Ty Dolla Sign, Brent Faiyaz, and MadeinTYO all provide excellent contributions to Floor Seats. This is not a record that you will want to miss! Check out A$AP Ferg’s new album Floor Seats below right now!

  • The Charts: Drake & Lil Nas X Still On Top

The Charts: Drake & Lil Nas X Still On Top

    • Drake scored his ninth #1 album with Care Package, and while it should be no surprise that a Drake project debuts on top, what is surprising is that he accomplished this with a collection of old songs. Care Package consists of 17 songs that have been previously released, but not available on streaming services until now. Many spent years racking up millions of plays on SoundCloud, but found new life with their inclusion on Care Package. The fact that a collection of old song can sell 110,000 albums in the first week is a testament to Drake, who clearly holds the title as the most successful artist in the streaming era.
    • Lil Nas X‘s “Old Town Road” extended its record-setting run at #1 on the Hot 100 charts to 19 weeks. At this point, even Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus believe the end should be near. Billy Ray tweeted earlier this week that it is “someone else’s turn now,” and Lil Nas X announced he will be performing his second single, “Panini,” at the VMAs.
    • Lil Durk also has a successful week, with his new project Love Songs 4 The Streets 2 debuting at #4 and selling just over 42,000 albums. The Chicago artist has evolved over the years, and his numbers show the fans appreciate his growth. He even joked that he has the biggest debut of last week because “Drake don’t count that’s Drake.”
    • I feel obligated to mention Lizzo‘s song “Truth Hurts” remained at #4 on the Hot 100, and her album Cuz I Love You is #8 on Billboard 200. She made headlines earlier this week when she was upset at those who do not consider her a rapper, dragging other artists into a since-deleted Twitter rant.
    • Chris Brown’s Indigo remained at #5, spending its 6th week in the Top 10 after debuting at #1 in July. The album is propelled by the success of “No Guidance,” which held at #6 on the Hot 100.
    • NF’s The Search and Chance the Rapper‘s The Big Day, which were #1 and #2, respectively, on last week’s chart, both stayed in the top 10. NF finds himself at #6 and Chance sits at #9.
    • Lil Tecca’s “Ransom” remained in the top 10, and with the release of a remix featuring Juice WRLD, is hoping to climb in next week’s charts.
    • Speaking of next week’s charts, they will feature new albums from Rick Ross and Trippie Redd. Ross’ Port of Miami 2 is projected to sell around 80,000 albums, while Trippie’s ! is on pace for 45,000 albums.
