‘SkeeYee’ Star Faces Backlash Over Edited Image with Civil Rights Icon
Sexyy Red has apologized to Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, after facing criticism for sharing an AI-generated image of herself dancing with the late civil rights leader.
The controversial post, shared on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20), quickly drew backlash, with Bernice King calling it “dishonoring” and “disrespectful.”
“This is intentionally distasteful, dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful to my family and my father,” Bernice wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He was assassinated for working for your civil and human rights and to end war and poverty. Please delete.”
Sexyy Red responded by deleting the post and offering a public apology. “You ain’t wrong, never meant to disrespect your family my apologies. Just reposted something I saw that I thought was innocent,” she wrote.
This isn’t the first time the St. Louis rapper has stirred controversy. In 2023, she sparked debate by expressing her admiration for Donald Trump, citing his impact on Black communities and economic relief efforts during his presidency.
Despite past political controversies, Sexyy Red has since distanced herself from Trump, revealing she voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
