Slick Rick aka Richard Martin Lloyd Walters was born in London in 1965. He’s best known as part of Doug E. Fresh & the Get Fresh Crew with their hits including “La Di Da Di” and “The Show.” His solo work is noted for his storytelling prowess and clever delivery. He is one of the most sampled and interpolated rappers to ever do it. Artists including gangster rapper Snoop Dogg and ’90s pop/ R&B act Color Me Badd used his style.
Slick Rick’s catalog includes four albums- The Great Adventures of Slick Rick (1988), The Ruler’s Back (1991), Behind Bars (1994), and The Art of Storytelling (1999). He’s worked with Oukast and Mod Def (Yasiin Bey) in his later career. His signature look of a Kangol hat and numerous gold chains became the prototype for other rappers that followed.
