Ice Cube explains why the first ‘Friday’ movie was more important than the others

Cube says the first installment of ‘Friday’ was more “impactful”

Ice Cube and his Mount Westmore partners E-40 and Too $hort recently pulled up at LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells Radio Show where he described why the first Friday film was more “impactful,” especially in discouraging gun violence.

LL brought up the infamous scene where the late John Witherspoon urged Cube’s character Craig to drop his gun and fight with his hands. Cube explained that the scene alone makes the film very influential. “It was an important scene and that’s why the first Friday is so impactful over the other ones,” Cube explained. “Because if you look at the other ones, they don’t have that moment in the movie.

“So it took a comedy and it took the laughter, and it was a teachable moment. It was dramatic in a movie that was so funny. It was impactful because what he was saying was some real shit.”

He added, “It’s cool because it was like, ‘Yo, I would have never moved in this neighborhood if you needed a goddamn gun to walk down the street.’ That’s impactful. Before Friday, shit was so crazy in the hood when I had it written that [Witherspoon] was like, ‘You going down the street? Take this [gun] with you.’”

Ice Cube reacts to Kanye West crediting him for his anti-Semitic views: “leave my name out”

Ice Cube doesn’t want to be involved with Kanye West’s anti-Jewish controversy

Ice Cube is not happy with Kanye West bringing his name up in his anti-Semitic rants. Ye had previously claimed on Drink Champs interview that Cube inspired his anti-Jewish attitude.

Cube took to Twitter on Tuesday (October 18) refuting Ye’s claims. “I hate that my name was dragged into this Drunk Champs bullshit,” Cube wrote in a tweet. “I don’t know what Ye meant by his statements, you’re gonna have to ask him. I didn’t put the batteries in his back. Please leave my name out of all the antisemitic talk. I’m not antisemitic and never have been.”

During his chat with N.O.R.E & DJ EFN on Drink Champs, Ye said, “Cube’s really set me up for this.” He added, “You’ve really influenced me to get on this antisemite vibe. I’m here to finish the job.”

Ice Cube says he wrote two new ‘Friday’ movie scripts but Warner Bros rejected them both

Ice Cube has tried to continue ‘Friday’ without success

Ice Cube recently made an appearance on N.O.R.E & DJ EFN’s Drink Champs where he made a promising yet disappointing revelation about a fourth Friday movie. The Compton legend said Warner Bros rejected two separate scripts he wrote for the film.

“I’m trying to get it out of Warner Brothers, they don’t believe in the culture man,” Cube explained. “I had two scripts. I wrote one; it was the shit. They was like, ‘Yo, we don’t want Craig and Day-Day in jail, ’cause Craig and Day-Day went to jail for selling weed before it was legal!”

“Then after they rejected it they had all these fucking movies about going to jail: Orange Is The New Black … Get Hard,” he continued. “So then I wrote another script, and the script was really about … the youngsters in the hood having beef with the OG’s in the hood and Craig has to come back and squash that because Smokey’s son is the new Deebo and he’s wylin! They tripped on it man, they fucked around and then John Witherspoon passed. Then Deebo passed … they just fucked it up.”

Ice Cube was in a group called Stereo Crew before he was in N.W.A.

Before he was in N.W.A., Ice Cube was in a group called Stereo Crew, a trio that featured K-Dee, Sir Jinx, and Ice Cube himself. Stereo Crew released a record in 1986 titled “She’s A Skag” under Epic Records, the record didn’t do well and the group got dropped and renamed themselves C.I.A., which stood for Cru’ in Action!.

Cru in Action released a song the following year titled “My Posse” produced by Jinx’s cousin, Dr. Dre, who would later join Ice Cube and Eazy-E to form N.W.A. in 1987. K-Dee and Sir Jinx went on to form Da Lench Mob.

    Friday

This movie gave us peak Ice Cube, Nia Long, and Chris Tucker. Cube wrote the movie with DJ Pooh and F. Gary Gray directed. This picture gave us catch phrases like, “and you know this, man” and, “bye, Felica,” to name a few.

So we shot this video where he was a DJ and she was an assassin coming to kill him, but when she saw him she fell in love with him and they went off and did what Prince do.” Ice Cube told James Corden in 2016.

Most of the music video was shot at Paisley Park in Minnesota. Watch Prince’s music video for “Love Sign”, directed by Ice Cube below.
