Defendants in Jay’s killing had filed for mistrial

Jam Master Jay’s murder trial is set to proceed after the judge turned down a mistrial motion filed by the defense. Per Associated Press, Judge LasShann DeArcy rejected the motion filed on Thursday (February 8), where defense lawyers argued that prosecutors misguided a witness through improper questioning.

The defense was referring to two of Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Misorek’s questions towards the former girlfriend of defendant Ronald Washington who is a witness. The questions were: “Did he say he killed Jam Master Jay?” and “Did he say that people get what they deserve?” The witness said yes to both questions.

Although Judge Shennan denied the mistrial request because the witness had made similar remarks in the past, she did point out that “there was no need whatsoever” for the prosecution to ask the questions.

50 Cent credits the late Jam Master Jay with teaching him about song structure

50 Cent met Jam Master Jay in 1996. The late Jay had his own label (JMJ Records), where he would help develop and mold young talent. Among those talents, was Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

“I didn’t have any song structure,” 50 spoke about in a 2014 interview with Vulture. “I didn’t know how to count bars. I knew a chorus was supposed to be on a song, so I put that area where it was repetitive, but there wasn’t a four-bar chorus or an eight-bar chorus that would have things that you would remember.”

It was Jay’s boot camp that would help groom 50 into the artist many have come to know today. Could you imagine songs like “P.I.M.P.,” “Many Men,” “Hate It Or Love It” having no direct song structure?

“It gave me the habit as a writer to up with more than one melody for the record,” 50 said. “So on “P.I.M.P.,” you’ll hear the chorus area, and then you’ll hear an area that feels like a bridge on the record, but that’s out of the habit that I write two or three melodies on every song. It’s like what Jay would say to me, “That’s good, but if it is what we think it is, you need another one.”

Jam Master Jay’s conspirators have been charged

While at a recording studio, Run-DMC’s own Jam Master Jay was gunned downed in Jamaica Queens of New York, at the age of 37.

It’s been 18 years since he was fatally shot, but it looks like justice is coming, as two men (Karl Jordan Jr and Ronald Washington) have been indicted on conspiracy to kill Jam Master Jay over a drug dispute.

Jam Master Jay allegedly transported kilos of cocaine from 1996-2002 while balancing his music career. In July 2002 Jay had roughly 10 kilograms of cocaine, to which Washington, Jordan and others were supposed to distribute as the indictment states. It was then that Washington and a co-conspirator got into a dispute with Jay. Jay cut Washington out of the deal. Washington and Jordan conspired to kill Jay and led them to kill him on October 30, 2002, shooting Jay in the head and another man in the leg, the report states.

Karl Jordan was arrested on Sunday and will be arranged today (8/17/2020). Washington’s arraignment will be for a later date.

“It was important to us then and remains extremely important to us now to bring justice for the victim, his family, friends and the community that cared so much about those events,” said Seth D. DuCharme, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
