YNW Melly’s Murder Case Takes Another Turn as Defense Attorney Faces Investigation

    Melly’s murder case faces complications

YNW Melly’s murder case is now even more complicated due to the investigation of his leading defense attorney, Raven Liberty, for witness tampering.

Liberty reportedly shares a connection with a case seeking tampering against the rapper himself from 2023 but has not been charged or commented on. Melly’s legal team says they want further information about what the attorney has been engaged in before making any plans on how they will proceed since it has been about a year since Melly had any direct in-person contact with Liberty.

Now, Jamell Demons, who also is the rapper’s real name, has a very tough decision to make regarding Liberty’s future on his defense team. Such changes, if made, could likely result in another delay for his retrial, now determined for September.

During Monday’s hearing (January 6) in court, the judge brought up a point that Melly had now spent over six years in lockup without being convicted. This incited a reaction from the rapper, aged 25, who was seen to laugh and say, “Damn,” as he tried to sound self-deprecating.

Melly waits to face retrial for double murder in the deaths of his friends, Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr., in 2018. The continuous unfolding nature of the case, together with the investigation of his attorney, adds uncertainty to this high-profile legal showdown.

He is seeking immediate release, arguing that the conditions are violating his constitutional rights and harming his health. Since 2019, Melly has been awaiting trial for the alleged murder of two men.

“Demons is a black male whose current detention conditions shock the conscience and could not even be imagined in this day and age even in a third-world country that has no guard rails protecting human decency and dignity,” the suit reads.

“For over three years, Petitioner Jamell Demons has not been permitted to make a single phone call or have a single visit with his family or any member of the outside world, including not seeing or speaking with his own mother in over three years!!!

“Demons has and continues to be subjected to the type of debilitating isolation that renders his conditions of incarceration cruel, unusual and beyond belief in a civilized society governed by Constitutional safeguards.”
