Timbaland reveals that Aaliyah’s “Try Again” was a result of a ‘mistake’ he made on his keyboard

Timb says one of his biggest hits was a mistake
It’s true that many of the songs that end up becoming hits weren’t intended to blow up. Timbaland can attest to that. During a recent discussion on I Am HipHop Podcast, Timb revealed that he made a mistake while playing with his keyboard when his engineer captured and it ended up being a hit, that is, Aaliyah’s “Try Again.”

“I was playing with this keyboard and it was a mistake, and my engineer Jimmy Douglass caught it. I said, ‘Jimmy did you catch that lil rhythm?, [and] he said, ‘I sure did,” Timb recalled.

“So [after] he caught it and played it back, I put the beat on it. I said, ‘Ooo, chop it right there,’ and he chopped it right there.”

He continued that Jay-Z was the one who convinced him that the record was a hit. “When JAY-Z came in the studio, he was like, ‘Oh my God,’ and that’s when I was like, ‘Yeah, we got one,” he said.

In August, it was announced that Baby Girl’s music would be coming to streaming services, after a long bout between her estate and record labels. You may recall that brief period of time when Drake and Noah “40” Shebib released “Enough Said” featuring Aaliyah, but was quickly pulled after 40 decided not to continue with the posthumous collab album.

“The world reacting to Drake’s involvement so negatively, I just wanted nothing to do with it. . . Ultimately, I wasn’t comfortable and didn’t like the stigma,” the niche producer said in a VIBE Magazine interview.

Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat” Was Written 2 Years Before Her Label Released It

Before Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat” single was released by her label two years after Static Major wrote the song. The label felt Aaliyah wasn’t ready for a sexual single at the time and had intentions on making “More Than A Woman” the second single from her self-titled album. The album released on July 7, 2001, would be the late singer’s last album.

The song, produced by Keybeats, was almost never completed, because Eric Seats didn’t feel the energy of the record at the time of production.

” I’m the kind of guy that once I start producing a track and I don’t feel it right away sometimes, I would delete it and just start something over fresh”

Luckily, the late Static Major got a hold of the track and after hearing it through headphones, he begin writing the hook right away.  Dave Foreman and Rapture Stewart were brought in to add strings and guitars to the production.

“More Than Woman” was originally supposed to be the official second single, but with the heavy airplay of “Rock The Boat,” the label decided to switch their decision.

“Rock The Boat” stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 25 weeks.
