A true renaissance man, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino is a writer, actor, singer, and rapper with a one-of-a-kind sense of humor. He wrote for TV’s 30 Rock and starred on Community before taking bigger Hollywood roles. As a musician, his song “Redbone” took over the summer when Jordan Peele’s Get Out hit theaters, as well as his role on FX’s Atlanta. Here are 5 of his best movies so far.
Guava Island
This original musical number was a visual EP for “This is America” and the other songs he released as Childish Gambino around that time. It stars Rihanna and was filmed on location in Cuba as an Amazon Prime exclusive.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
In this 2017 superhero blockbuster, Donald Glover played Aaron Davis. For Marvel nerds, they know his character was Miles Morales’ uncle. Time will tell if he gets pulled back into the MCU in case they bring the Black Spider-Man to the big screen.
The Lion King
This role was more voice acting but it still counts. Donald Glover portrayed an adult Simba with ease and put a new spin on the music from the beloved Disney classic rebooted as a live action feature.
Weirdo
His early stand up is hilarious, as seen in this 2011 special. His jokes teeter on the absurd at times, sharing a perspective that sets him apart. Never one to shy away from embarrassing self-truths, his comedy is ironically universal in its uniqueness.
Solo: A Star Wars Story
How often do we get to see a Black man kick ass and take names in the Star Wars universe? His take on a young Lando Calrissian was priceless. It got even better when he mocked the fact on SNL. The good news is that Disney+ is supposedly rumored to create a TV spin-off starring Glover.
Childish Gambino (also known as Donald Glover), recorded parts of his 2013 sophomore album ‘Because The Internet’ on an iPhone. The album cuts “Flight of the Navigator,” ”Worldstar,” & “Telegraph Ave” all feature recordings from his iPhone.
According to Childish Gambino’s producer Ludwig Göransson, who made some verified annotations on the lyric website Genius, half of the vocals on “Flight of the Navigator,” were recorded on an iPhone saying: “Donald sang a melody into his iPhone, in fact all the vocals on the first half of the song are sung into his iPhone.”
Ludwig then revealed that on the albums second cut “Worldstar,” the tick used as a percussion is Ableton’s metronome recorded with an iPhone saying: “We needed something really hard and we came up with an idea to make a beat based on the metronome. I recorded Ableton’s click on my iPhone and then put a bunch of different [effects] on it.”
Lastly Göransson revealed on “Telegraph Ave,” Childish Gambino recorded the melody on his iPhone saying: “That vocal line gave it a very [indie] vibe, which was interesting, because the other sounds I use in the chorus are a bit more commercial and 2013 rap production sounding,”
‘Because The Internet’ was released on December 10, 2013 and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 charts.
