Synopsis of Kanye’s ‘Donda 2’ listening event

    Donda 2 listening experience

Just three short months ago, Kanye West released the deluxe version of his long-awaited tenth studio album, Donda. Which included five new songs on top of the original Donda album, totaling in 32 new songs. The road to Donda was paved with theatrics, drama, and entertainment unsurprisingly, the last few months have been filled with even more drama.

This drama includes a complicated divorce and custody battle with Kanye’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian, beef with Kim’s new boy toy Pete Davidson, publicly calling out Billie Eilish and long-time collaborator and friend, Kid Cudi, and more.

This drama led to the hype of a new listening event announced by Kanye himself on an Instagram post in January. This listening event would feature unreleased songs from Donda 2, Kanye’s next album, which is executively produced by Future. This led many to believe it would be a less religion-focused album and more trap rap-influenced. The event would take place on 2-22-22 in LoanDepot Park, Miami, home of the Miami Marlins.

Prior to the show, streaming of backstage cameras where available on Kanye’s website, KanyeWest.com, which revealed Elon Musk, Rick Ross, Jack Harlow, and Kanye’s children were in attendance. The park filled in at around half capacity with eager and anxious fans ready to get a new glimpse of what Kanye had cooked up in just three short months. The show began about an hour and 30 minutes late, and started with a heartbeat sound which many believed was actually Kanye’s real heartbeat backstage.

Soon enough Kanye emerged, sporting his usual Donda era attire- black everything including tall yeezy boots. However, this was the first listening party Ye was not wearing a mask, but instead had clear contact lenses in (seen below).

The show started with the replica home of Kanye and Donda West (which was shown at the last Donda listening event in Chicago) raging in flames but then being put out by water which surrounded the home as the stage. The first song started, which happened to feature a hook from the late Florida rapper, XXXTENTACION, who grew up just thirty minutes away. The new unreleased songs rang through the stadium with cheers as Ye danced and sang along. What stood out with this show was the amazing visuals provided by the reflecting water as Ye seemed to literally ‘walk on water’ around the replica home portraying his emotions of the songs.

The album featured an array of artists such as Future, Migos, Travis Scott, Baby Keem, Playboi Carti, Soulja Boy, XXXTentacion, Jack Harlow, Don Toliver, Vory, and more.

Donda 2 has a different vibe to it than its predecessor, featuring more aggressive rap and trap style drums than the softer religious influenced Donda. However, I am sad to report that Donda 2 is no where near finished. Many of the songs had demo verses from Kanye, which could be heard as him just mumbling over the beat trying to find his flow for whenever he wants to complete it. The album also desperately needs some professional mixing done to it. All we can do now is wait for an announcement of another listening party and hope Ye and his keeps working on it until completion.

Can’t wait for the next stage in Donda 2’s rollout, stay tuned.

5 facts about Kanye West’s ‘DONDA’ album

Kanye West’s long-awaited tenth studio album, Donda, which is a tribute to his late mother, is full of historic moments, controversy, music greatness and genius is finally out in full.

Here are 5 facts you may or may not know about the 2021 rap album of the year Grammy nominee.

    1) Tracks from the album were premiered at FOUR separate listening events. Something we had never seen from an Artist on this level. Read an article exclusively about these events here.

As these events were some of the biggest gatherings since the COVID-19 pandemic – Kanye offered free COVID-19 vaccines to the ticketed fans who attended — and event-goers were required to show proof of vaccine or a negative test to enter.

    2) 32 tracks of Donda West religious rap-influenced music made its debut at number one on the Billboard 200, making West one of only seven artists with at least ten number one albums in the 65-year history of the chart.

    3) Numerous stars attended the listening events, in support of Kanye’s work dedicated to his late mother.

This included, in no particular order,- Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian-West and their four children, DaBaby, Marilyn Mansion, Westside Gunn, Jadakiss, Jay Electronica, Dave Chappelle, Chance The Rapper, Lil Durk, Travis Scott, Roddy Ricch, Ty Dolla $ign, Kid Cudi, Don Toliver, Shenseea, and more.

    4) Kanye has gone on record saying Donda was released by Universal without his approval.

He wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post claiming, “Universal put my album out without my approval and they blocked Jail 2 from being on the album.”

After the scrapping of Yahndi in 2019 and then borderline exhausting and confusing fans with four listening parties, many believe Universal had a set date when the album needed to be released. As many of us know, Kanye has never been one to drop an album when we think he will, even if he explicitly tweets out a date.

    5) During the Donda rollout listening parties and even up into the release of the Deluxe on November 14th, Kanye and his team continued to change and critique the album throughout.

Verses and hooks were cut, changed, or even added. Mostly on the ‘pt 2s’ of songs. For example, Kid Cudi has an added verse on ‘Remote Control pt 2‘, Ty Dolla $ign has an added verse on ‘Junya pt 2‘, and Tyler the Creator had backup vocals added on ‘Come to Life‘. Also, the deluxe edition has a completely reordered track list, as well as adding 5 bonus tracks.

Mike Dean, one of the main executive producers of Donda, explained how Kanye West adjusted the album after each listening party. West would shape the album based on in-person and online reactions after each listening party, among Kanye’s personal input, of course.

    Bonus Fact

One prime/intriguing example of the critiques comes from the added deluxe track, ‘Life of the Party‘ The song was cut from ‘Donda‘ at the request of the featured Outkast rapper Andre 3000 in protest against Ye’s decision to edit out all swear words from the album.

The original track, which can be found here on Youtube, leaked in September, and with it came an aggressive verse from Kanye aimed at Drake. The track was later added to the Donda deluxe and also released as an explicit single, meeting the request by Andre. However, it was mostly an entire new verse from Ye, with no mention of Drake.
