Glo Teams Up with Dave Chappelle for a Viral Sketch

GloRilla’s rise to stardom continues as she made her debut as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live (SNL) this past weekend. The Memphis rapper, fresh off her 2023 mixtape Ehhtang Ehhthang and debut album GLORIOUS, has proven herself a formidable force in the music world. With chart-topping hits like “Yeah Glo!,” “Wanna Be,” and “TGIF,” her accomplishments only seem to multiply. Despite a recent incident at a performance where a shoe was thrown at her, GloRilla’s career is clearly on an upward trajectory.

Her SNL appearance, where legendary comedian Dave Chappelle joined her as host, was a major highlight. The chemistry between the two during sketches was undeniable, with one particularly popular sketch parodying the viral “Pop The Balloon” trend from YouTube. In the sketch, contestants must find a date while a row of suitors holds balloons to determine if they’re worthy of continuing. Chappelle even brought back beloved characters from Chappelle’s Show, like Silky Johnson and Ashy Larry, adding a nostalgic touch to the sketch.

While her path to the top hasn’t been without challenges, GloRilla’s SNL moment only further solidifies her place at the forefront of female hip-hop.

  • GloRilla’s “TGIF” Named TIME’s Best Song of the Year

GloRilla’s “TGIF” Named TIME’s Best Song of the Year

GloRilla’s smash hit song “TGIF” was declared as “Song of the Year” by TIME magazine after topping the publication’s music recap for the year.

The magazine announced its year-ender on Monday (December 9), naming some of the most remarkable songs from 2024. Editors pointed out that no artist would appear on both the “Best Songs” and “Best Albums” lists, which showed a wider coverage of music.

Some such as Beyonce’s “Riiverdance,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” and Kehlani’s “After Hours” missed the spot by “TGIF.”

“For GloRilla, being single is a supernatural experience,” states TIME critic Stephen Kearse. “When this Memphis rapper isn’t in a relationship, she’s not only free of headaches and responsibilities; she gets supercharged- unstoppable, glowing.”

He continues: “She spends ‘TGIF’ toasting to this heightened state over seismic bass kicks and a cinematic horn loop that conjures Godzilla ascending from the Pacific.”

Kearse praises how GloRilla has managed to turn these mundane things about taking care of oneself into a huge orchestra of triumph-“This is a display of power and not empowerment.”

This super-nice anthem has further cemented GloRilla’s place as an aggressive player in the music industry.

Plies’ lawyer denies lawsuit targets Black women

On November 6, Plies will file a lawsuit against some of the biggest names in the industry for allegedly sampling his songs without permission. Names like Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, and Soulja Boy are mentioned in the copyright infringement lawsuit.

However, most of the attention focused on Megan and GloRilla whose fans have taken to Instagram comment sections to shade Plies for what they deem possible attacks against Black women.

The backlash has been so fierce that one of his lawyers, Aaron J. Thornton, found himself having to release a statement. According to him, though, Plies does not have any personal anger towards Megan, GloRilla or even any other parties involved in this lawsuit but is only seeking out compensation from these labels due to what he feels is improper procedure.

“This lawsuit isn’t a strategically timed attack against Black women,” Thornton stated. “Plies has said a lot of meaningful and important things in support of Black women.”
