    Dean has a busy schedule ahead

    Mike Dean is currently locked in with Travis Scott putting together the latter’s long-awaited album, Utopia. Once done with La Flame’s album, the prominent producer and record engineer will be hands on on a joint album with The Weeknd.

    Dean made the revelation on Twitter Friday (June 16) but didn’t provide further information about Utopia nor Weeknd’s project. “Thank you. I’m on tour. Finishing utopia. And doing another mike dean / weeknd album,” Mike Dean tweeted.

    The Weeknd debuted his new HBO series film, The Idol, earlier this month where he stars as Tedros. During a recent interview with Complex, Abel admitted that he didn’t want viewers to “romanticize” his character and deliberately wanted Tedros to be “a fucking scumbag.”

    “I wanted to make sure we felt so disgusted by this character,” Weeknd explained. “When you think about real-life scumbags, especially brainwashing cult leader types like him, there are so many directions you can go. I went into it, like, ‘Why pull the punches? Why take you down a journey and romanticize him? Let’s just jump right into it. He’s a fucking scumbag.”

    Weeknd rakes up billions of streams with ‘Afterhours’

    The Weeknd maintains his streaming stronghold on Spotify, thanks to his album Afterhours. Chart Data shared on Sunday (May 28) that the album has now garnered over 10B streams on Spotify.

    Released in March 2020 as Abel’s fourth studio album, Afterhours received production from the likes of DaHeala, Illangelo, Max Martin, Metro Boomin, OPN among others. The blockbuster debuted on top of the Billboard 200 chart with 444K equivalent album units sold in the opening week, 275K of which were pure album sales.

    The Weeknd is planning to leave his old-self behind in the near future. The Canadian singer recently appeared on an interview with W Magazine where he unveiled the possibility of dropping The Weeknd moniker and perhaps, drop music as Abel after he releases his next album.

    “I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he revealed. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn. The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

    Weeknd previewed the record during ‘The Idol’ film premiere

    The Weeknd surprised his fans during The Idol film premiere last week when he previewed an unreleased collab with Playboi Carti. Neither Weeknd nor Carti has revealed any more details about the forthcoming track.

    In an interview with W Magazine earlier this month, the Afterhours singer shared that he is approaching the end of The Weeknd chapter and could release music under the moniker Abel in the future.

    Weeknd continues to dominate Spotify

    The Weeknd isn’t done breaking new records. This weekend, the Canadian superstar became the first black artist to have an album accumulate 10B streams in Spotify history, thanks to his blockbuster record, Starboy.

    The album was released in 2016 as Weeknd’s third studio album via XO and Republic Records. It featured appearances from Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Future. For production, Weeknd recruited the likes of Diplo, Cashmere Cat, Metro Boomin, Frank Dukes, and Labrinth and more.

    It became Weeknd’s second consecutive No. 1 album after moving 348K equivalent album units in the opening week.

    Abel has new music on the way

    The Weeknd confirms new music is on the way. The Canadian singer revealed on Instagram Thursday (April 13) that he has a new project, The Idol Vol. 1, arriving soon. “THE IDOL VOL. 1 💿 coming soon (double fantasy & jealous guy just a taste),” he wrote under a snippet of an unreleased song he was listening to with Mike Dean, who’ll likely be featured heavily on the project.

    Earlier this week, Weeknd took to Instagram to preview new music including a feature from Future. He also previewed the music in the presence of Mike Dean, which further suggests the producer’s extensive involvement in the forthcoming project.

    It looks like Weeknd and Future have new music on the way

    The Weekend might be looking to drop new music soon. On Monday evening (April 10), Abel hopped on Instagram live previewing a number of songs from the studio where Mike Dean can be seen in the background. It is presumed that Future features on one of the songs.

    The Toronto megastar released his last album, Dawn FM, in January 2022. A few days after the album dropped, Weeknd revealed that along with 2021’s Afterhours, the album is part of a trilogy. Perhaps he is gearing up to complete the trilogy.
