2017 will go down as a monumental year for hip-hop and rap fans, with projects dropping from Drake, Lil Uzi, Playboi Carti, Tyler, the Creator, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, 21 Savage, and many more.
One notable project from 2017 that often goes overlooked is SUPER SLIMEY, a collaborative mixtape released on October 20, 2017, by Atlanta superstar rappers Young Thug and Future.
Fresh off their Billboard Hot 100 certified 2× Platinum hit “Relationship“, rumors began to swirl that Future and Young Thug were working on a project, fueled by their numerous social media posts showcasing photos and tweets from their studio sessions together. An article by Complex highlights the buildup and signs that led to their highly anticipated collaboration tape.

5 facts about SUPER SLIMEY
1- The mixtape’s release and cover art were announced a day prior to release, on October 19, 2017
One day prior to release, the two rappers posted the title of the album along with the release date and covert art, which features a green snake-symbolizing Young Thug — who has a known love for snakes and even owns one — wrapped around a bird’s head, representing Future’s Freebandz label. The slimey texture is thought to symbolize codeine syrup, which both artists often reference in their music.

2- ‘SUPER SLIMEY’ debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 (Behind Shania Twains, ‘Now’). The tape sold 75,000 album-equivalent units, of which 15,000 were pure album sales in its first week of release
3- ‘SUPER SLIMEY‘ marked Future’s third top-three debut album of 2017, following the success of his self-titled album, FUTURE, and its companion, HNDRXX
Fast forward to 2024, and Future would surpass this feat by releasing three debut number-one albums in the same year: WE DON’T TRUST YOU, WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU, and MIXTAPE PLUTO, all of which debuted at number one.
4- The only track featuring a guest artist turned out to be the tape’s most popular song
The sole feature song on the tape, “Patek Water”‘ featured Migos’ member, Offset. The track’s popularity was likely boosted by the success of Migos’ #1 platinum album, Culture, which had dropped at the beginning of the same year and topped the Billboard 200.
“Patek Water,” which references Patek Philippe watches and the trio’s lavish lifestyles, reached #50 on Billboard’s Hot 100. HNHH called the collaboration a “standout,” while Pitchfork noted that the “timepiece-flashing song is a collective heat-check for three of rap’s hottest MCs.”
5- ‘SUPER SLIMEY’ was primarily recorded in Atlanta, with much of the production coming from local Atlanta-based producers
Both Future and Young Thug take pride in their roots, frequently referencing their hometown city of Atlanta in their music, so it would make sense that this collaboration primarily took place there. Notable producers on the album include Southside, Wheezy, London on da Track, and Mike WiLL Made-It, among others.
While Future and Young Thug have teamed up on countless tracks, SUPER SLIMEY remains an often-overlooked treasure of the 2010s. The mixtape embodies their unique chemistry and creative flair, showcasing the best of both artists while celebrating a pivotal moment in hip-hop.
Thug wants beefing parties to get back to working together
Young Thug is not okay with the rift between Drake and the collective of Future and Metro Boomin. The incarcerated rapper’s X account recently shared a message calling for a truce between the three. “@Drake @1future @MetroBoomin we all bruddas,” he wrote began. “Music aint the same without us collabin.”
Wunna says his contract and relationship with Thug & YSL remains the same
Gunna has constantly faced snitching allegations since he took a plea deal that secured his freedom in the YSL RICO case last year. Speaking in Spotify’s recent documentary A Day In The Life with Gunna, the “Hakuna Matata” rapper explained that he’s still under YSL.
“I’m still signed to YSL. I’m still providing. I’m still pushing. No paperwork has been changed,” he said.
The Atlanta rapper has released two successful albums since he was released: a Gift & a Curse and One OfWun, both of which dropped under YSL and 300 Entertainment.
Earlier this year, Gunna told XXL that his relationship with Thugger is “the same. It’s love, always. Our relationship is our relationship.”
A witness in the YSL RICO case named Lil Woody, who’s a Young Thug associate, was tossed in jail after he refused to take the stand against the Bussines Is Bussines rapper, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Woody had been offered immunity if he testified.
Woody invoked his Fifth Ammendment right to self-incrimination even for questions about his age and Judge Ural Glanville ordered him to be held in willful contempt until Monday (June 10). To counter this, Thugger’s attorney Brian Steel filed for a mistrial.
Tip says YSL prosecutors do not have a strong case
T.I. is sure Young Thug will be victorious in the end of his YSL RICO case as the prosecution can’t to prove to have a good case.
“He comin’ home,” Tip recently said on The Breakfast Club. “I don’t think that the prosecution has successfully proven a case of him knowingly and willingly participating in an active street gang. I just don’t see it.
“I don’t think that the witnesses they’ve called thus far have proven what they said they would prove,” he added. “I just don’t think that the grounds of their case have been presented properly. Just ain’t seen it.”
Wunna believes people have been fed wrong information about his plea deal
Gunna has been taking heat since last year when he took a plea deal that saw him released from jail where he was being held in connection to the YSL RICO case involving Young Thug and 27 others. The rapper has faced snitching accusations ever since.
Recently speaking to XXL, Gunna said he believes people who think he snitched have been misinformed. “I definitely feel like everybody’s been misled,” he said. “And like, you know, when you’re being misled, you got a choice to follow or make your own decisions. And that’s what is being shown right now. You’re being a follower or you’re being neutral to be like, ‘I don’t know what their business is or what they really got goin’ on.’”
Gunna clears the air on his relationship with his mentor and label head Young Thug. Since being freed from jail last year thanks to a plea deal, many rappers and fans have accused the College Park rapper of snitching in the YSL RICO case.
During a recent interview with XXL, Wunna was asked about the state of his relationship with Thug. “It’s the same,” he answered. “It’s love, always. Our relationship is our relationship.”
Speaking on the criticism from his peers like Lil Durk, 21 Savage and Lil Baby, the “rodeo dr” artist said, “None of those rappers, they’re not on the case. They don’t know legally what’s going on.” He added that he spoke to “two or three of those guys” through phonecalls and the conversations occured “peacefully.”
