Future released his mixtape Monster on October 28, 2014. The beat to Codeine Crazy, the last song on the project, was originally made for Nicki Minaj. Producer TM88 revealed in a 2017 interview, Future's Monster beat was meant for Nicki Minaj's third studio album, The Pinkprint.
“I really made the beat for Nicki, She was working on her album and I wanted to give her some beats so bad, and I ended up not getting them to her. Future called, I think it was the next day or next two days, and he was like, ‘Bro, I need some beats. I'm going in. I need you.' I was like, ‘fuck it,' and I sent the whole pack to him. Ended up getting a lot of stuff that's on Monster, and Codeine Crazy is one of them.” – TM88 told HNHH
TM88 also produced Fetti, After That, and Showed Up on Monster.
