Roxanne Shante‘s 1984 “Roxanne’s Revenge” was the first known Hip-Hop diss track. The diss record “Roxanne’s Revenge” was released in responses to U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne, Roxanne“.
Roxanne Shante was just 14-years-old at the time she recorded and released the diss, she responded to the group’s 1981’s “Roxanne, Roxanne,” which is a song about a girl with the name Roxanne who doesn’t accept the advances men make at her. Roxanne Shante, having the name “Roxanne” took this as her chance to respond and call out members of U.T.F.O. on their own beat.
Roxanne recorded the diss track in one take. U.T.F.O. and “Roxanne, Roxanne” producers Full Force, replied with a new release that wasn’t directly aimed at Roxanne Shanté. The group’s reply featured Elease Jack, who had the name The Real Roxanne. Roxanne Shanté responded by releasing Bite This and Queen Of Rox (Shanté Rox On). Other rappers started releasing their version of Roxanne disses till it became played out.
