In a development in YNW Melly’s murder trial, he will no longer face capital punishment and instead faces life in prison if convicted of the killings of his friends YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy.
The filing says: “The State must additionally now prove that the Defendant committed the charged offenses for the of purpose benefiting, promoting, or furthering the interests of a criminal gang, which was never alleged in the original Indictment. Since the 45-day Notice of Intent to Seek Death has expired, the State should therefore be precluded from seeking a penalty of death in this cause.”
He was arrested in 2019 and has remained in jail with a pending trial date. He had COVID-19 in 2020 and petitioned for an early releaser but was denied. Since his trial date keeps getting delayed, his legal team has demanded a speedy trial in the next few months.
