How many Bars are in a Verse?

Share

If you’re like a lot of rappers, singers, or producers/beat-makers, you have probably thought or wondered, how much bars are in a verse? or how many bars should i put in a verse? The answer is that it depends on the song, there is no right or wrong when it comes to bars in a verse. It all comes down to creative preferences.

Let’s start with what a bar and a verse is. A “bar” is a line of rap or lyric in a song. Bars are lines of raps or lyrics in a song. A bar consists of 4 beats or 4 rhythms of music, for example 1, 2, 3, 4. A “verse” is a section filled with lines or bars on a rap song. It is the same for R&B.

The typically or “standard” amount of bars in a verse is 16 (sixteen), especially in hip-hop/rap music…. but a verse can be 8 bars, 16 bars, 24 bars, or even 32 bars depending on the structure of the song, the length of the beat or the tempo (bpm or beats per minute).

If a song has 3 verses or more it will probably be 16 bars each verse, and if a song has 2 verses, it will probably be 24 bars. A hook or chorus is 8 bars. An intro is 4-8 bars. An outro is 4-8 bars, a bridge is usually 4-8 bars.
