Cube praised Tyler for representing LA in music and culture
Ice Cube poured words of commendation on Tyler, The Creator while recently speaking to HipHopDX, praising the Odd Future creator for waving high the LA flag in music and culture.
“To me, that is L.A.,” Cube referred to Tyler’s victory. “That’s the L.A. people don’t know about, which are ultra creative individuals who won’t conform to the culture of gangbanging. They’re going to be themselves.”
He attributed that originality to Tyler with that of barbarians coming from the West Coast, like the Pharcyde and the Black Eyed Peas whom Cube mentioned are unlike others who would never comply with the “norms” of the industry.
“You’re going to always have those groups that are going to stay down with their own style and their own flavor, and going to win with it,” Cube explained. “Because they’re not conforming; they’re not being what you want them to be because they’re being who they are, and you gotta salute that.”
The rap icon declared such statements because, for him, that is the art of Tyler and how Tyler could etch his lane in what seems to be an overbearing industry. It’s the face in which Cube envisions Tyler — a muscle in the many energies that coalesce to become the often-overlooked side that is life in creative L.A.
