5 Rappers Repping New Jersey

Share

New York City is the birthplace of hip-hop, but with New Jersey right next door, it makes sense some top-tier rappers emerged from the Garden State. Groups like The Outsidaz, Lords of the Underground, Naughty by Nature, and Poor Righteous Teachers helped to define the classic Jersey sound. Here are five rappers that rep NJ.

Lauryn Hill

In addition to Ms. Hill, Wyclef, Pras, and many members of the Refugee Camp All-Stars come from New Jersey. Her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a sacred object in the hip-hop universe. She stole the show on Nas’ “Nobody” record from King’s Disease II in 2021.

Fetty Wap

This rapper took over the game in 2015-16 with his signature, one-eyed look. He’s from Paterson, NJ, and has had his share of legal troubles since becoming famous but what’s new for rappers?

Joe Budden

While Joey doesn’t rap anymore, he was signed to Def Jam and later became a member of rap supergroup Slaughterhouse.

Redman

The Funk Doc Dpock has always repped Brick City to the fullest. Newark, NJ is where he calls home. He made waves as a solo star and as a member of The Def Squad and Redman and Method Man.

Queen Latifah

Not to be forgotten is New Jersey rap pioneer Queen Latifah. She has been in the game for decades and was smart to learn the business side of the music industry.
