RUN DMC member Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell in Brooklyn, NY, was a popular DJ and producer. He moved to Hollis, Queens at age ten where he met Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels and joined them as their DJ. He played bass, keyboards, and drums in addition to turntablism.
Jam Master Jay helped discover 50 Cent and was tragically gunned down in his recording studio in 2002. The incident was eventually connected to Supreme Team gang leader Kenneth McGriff. Two men were arrested in relation to the murder. Jam Master Jay is mourned by the rap community and his contributions to the art form have helped push the culture forward.
