Black Thought and Danger Mouse hack the game with Cheat Codes
Philly spitter Black Thought and superproducer Danger Mouse have teamed up for a project titled Cheat Codes. The 12-track album is full of bangers from The Roots frontman. Hard bars over eccentric boom bap courtesy of the Gnarls Barkley maestro. It features Joey Badass, Russ, Conway the Machine, Raekwon, and others.
A true emcee’s emcee, Thought is a lyrical giant. His flows stay dipped in the latest street slang and academic-level references. The soulful chops produced by Danger Mouse provide the perfect backdrop for Tariq Trotter to create his verbal theater. “Belize” is a rare treat, featuring the late MF Doom.
Black Thought has been busy with his gig on Jimmy Fallon. He’s released a series of EPs called Streams of Thought over the past few years. The Roots’ last project was 2014’s “…And Then You Shoot Your Cousin” and fans have long thirsted for a solo project from Black Thought, and like “A Written Testimony” by Jay Electronica, this might be the closest we get.
