Missy Elliott influenced one of Lil Wayne’s earliest classic hooks

Lil Wayne is one of the most influential rappers of our generation. Throughout his run in the rap game, he has pioneered the modern rap, to the extent of being perceived as the GOAT by many hiphop stakeholders. Through his hard work and dedication Weezy has attained huge success with a vast catalog most of it dubbed as classic.

Even as influential as Tunechi is, he also has idols he looked up to. Tha Carter IV rapper was recently interviewed by DJ Khaled on the first episode of his ‘First One’ podcast released on Amazon Music. DJ Khaled started off by asking Wayne who influenced him when he made “Block Burner” and “Block Is Hot.” “Missy Elliott, That was my favorite rapper.” responded Lil Wayne, before adding “That would be why I was making so many sounds, Missy was into the who — brrrrr — the whole heeheeheeHA. And so when Mannie Fresh would get you in the studio, he gon’ remind you ‘hey, you need to throw that ha ha in there.’ I was like ‘man, he want me to do a sound for every damn line!’ And so the ‘Block Burner’ song was my best favorite song because my favorite artist was Missy Elliott.”

Missy Elliott has since responded to the praises by appreciating the big shout from Lil Wayne.

Block Burner was a track off Hot Boy’s 1997 album Get It How U Live where Weezy contributed solely. Block Is Hot was the lead single from Lil Wayne’s debut studio album of the same name (Block Is Hot). The track featured rappers Juvenile & B. G.
